Kids' Fitness & Health

From preschoolers to preteens, kids need exercise and good nutrition, the same as adults. The library materials and websites below are designed to get kids moving and teach them about keeping their bodies healthy and eating right. Whether your child is a sports enthusiast or is more interested in dance and yoga, the Children’s Library of the Canton Public Library has materials about a wide variety of physical activities, as well as nutrition and health.

The Kids' Baseball Workout by Jeffrey B. Fuerst: A fun way to get in shape and improve your game.

Body Talk: The Straight Facts on Fitness, Nutrition & Feeling Great About Yourself! by Ann Douglas and Julie Douglas: Information for preteens on exercise, nutrition and eating disorders.

The Busy Body Book by Lizzy Rockwell: A preschool introduction to the human body, how it functions, and its need for exercise.

Dinosaurs Alive and Well: A Guide to Good Health by Laurie Krasny Brown: Presents simple advice on nutrition, exercise, relationships with friends and family, plus ways of dealing with stress. Ilustrated by Marc Brown of “Arthur” fame.

Physical Fitness by Alvin Silverstein, Virginia Silverstein and Laura Silverstein Nunn: Information on health, physical fitness and exercise.

The Right Moves: A Girl's Guide to Getting Fit and Feeling Good by Tina Schwager and Michele Schuerger: Explains how girls can achieve total fitness by developing a positive self-image, choosing nutritious foods and exercising regularly.

Babar's Yoga for Elephants by Laurent de Brunhoff: Babar the elephant demonstrates and provides step-by-step instructions for basic yoga techniques and positions, then shows how he and Celeste use them to relax and have fun as they travel around the world.

Sesame Street: Elmocize (Videocassette): Elmo's Excercise Camp is a place where kids and Sesame Street muppets bend, stretch and hop their way to feeling good.

Get Ready, Get Set, Get Fit! (Videocassette): Kids exercise with fitness instructor, Luri Page. Recommended for childred ages 4-12.

Little Kicks: Dynamic Cardio-Fitness Workout (Videocassette): A workout tape for ages 4-12.

Tae-Bo Junior (Videocassette): Seven-time World Martial Arts Champion, Billy Blanks, introduces Tae-Bo to kids. Helps blend kids' hidden strength with moves from Tae-Kwon-Do, boxing and dance, and combines the workouts with new music.

YogaKids (Videocassette): YogaKids introduces children to yoga in clear, simple and safe ways that make learning yoga easy and fun. For children ages 3-10.

Hip Hop Animal Rock Workout (Videocassette): Leader Jennifer Lynn works out with kids to fun animal songs such as “Elephant Glide,” “Orangutan Swing” and “Funky Kangaroo.”

Growing Up Fit at Elliott's Gym (Videocassette): Elliot and his animated friend will get your children started on a program that will help them in all their other activities... from ballet to baseball. A 30-minute fun-filled workout for kids ages 2-4.

Compact Discs

Mousercise: Exercise to a medley of Disney favorites.

Silly Willy Sports Workout by Brenda Colgate: Kids work out with Silly Willy to sports songs such as “Basketball Star,” “It's Tennis Time” and “Football Fever.” For ages 3-8.

Silly Willy Moves Through the ABC's by Brenda Colgate: Teaches the alphabet, letter sounds, vocabulary and creative movement while developing fitness and locomotor skills.

Websites

Sports Illustrated for Kids: The web version of the famous kids’ magazine. Look for articles about "how to do" your sport, which can include safety tips and other information.

BAM! Body and Mind: Health and fitness information for kids from the Centers for Disease Control.

BodyWise: Information for girls on body image, fitness and nutrition.

Nutrition Explorations: Activities and recipes designed to promote good nutrition. Sponsored by the National Dairy Council.
