Diversity and Inclusion Movie Series

We are proud to announce our partnership with the Plymouth Canton Citizens for Diversity and Inclusion, a diverse group of community members. Its goal is to further diversity and inclusion throughout the Plymouth/Canton Community. Their vision is to guide our community to recognize the importance of building a culturally diverse place with the spirit of inclusion which will create a welcoming environment. The first movie in our Diversity and Inclusion Movie Series is:

The great debaters — starring Denzel Washington. This deeply-inspiring film based on a true story. Washington stars as a brilliant, politically radical debate team coach who transforms a group of underdog African American college students.

To that end, we are hosting a movie series of important films that emphasize that theme. One film we will watch and discuss is Ocean of Pearls at a time/date to be announced. Dr. Amrit Singh, a Sikh, is of two worlds, but at odds with both. He is offered a prestigious hospital position, but struggles to be the man he is and the person he wants to become.

Open Chess

Tim Heller, avid chess player, hosts informal open play on the second and fourth Sundays of most months in the Community Room while providing instruction and pointers on improving your game. Beginners welcome. The fourth Sunday of each month also includes a tournament by "Library Chess Clubs." For tournament information and registration, please email clubchess@wowway.com. January dates areJanuary 13 and 27 at 1:00 PM in the library Community Room.

Knit Night

Join other handcrafters for an evening of sharing and learning. All ages and stages are welcome at this informal gathering. See you on January 14 at 7:00 PM in the library Purple Room.

Intermediate Excel

A more advanced Excel class, great for work or school projects. Learn custom sorting and conditional formatting to make sense of your data. Create eye-catching tables, charts and graphs. Prerequisite: Beginning Excel 2007 or previous experience with Excel. Join us Thursday, January 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 AM.

Beginning Excel

Learn to create a spreadsheet and manage a list with Microsoft Excel 2007. Prerequisite: Mouse and keyboarding skills. Join us Saturday, January 19th from 10:00 to 11:30 AM.

Biggest Loser - Buddy Shuh

You have made your commitment to Canton Township's 100 Days to Health. Biggest Loser Contestant, Buddy Shuh shares the triumph of losing 163 pounds while overcoming the grief of losing his baby daughter. Buddy's spiritual journey is told in his book, The Story of Bella. Buddy will be speaking as well as selling and signing copies on Thursday, January 17th at 7:00 PM.

MLK, Jr Movie Marathon

Please join us on Monday, January 21st as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King changed all of our lives during the 1960's civil rights movement. Share stories of his life with the following films:
  • 12:00 Noon — Man of Peace in a Time of War
  • 1:15 PM — King: Go Beyond the Dream to Discover the Man
  • 3:00 PM — In Remembrance of Martin

What the Presidential Election Means to Your Investments

Many investors are worried about how the recent Presidential election results will impact their portfolio. Search Engine Optimization Seminar

Search engine optimization (SEO) is an internet marketing strategy that strategically considers how search engines work and how people search.  This makes it possible for a website to be on the first page in relevant categories when anyone searches for goods and/or services.   

Join us on Wednesday, January 23rd from 6:30-8:30 PM as Roy of Team Hypernet takes the mystery out of SEO and shows the steps to get your webpage in the top search engine results.  If you are a business owner, be sure to come and pick up some great tips!

Toys For Tots

We're collaborating with the Board Gaming League of Canton by collecting Toys for Tots all day on December 1 - 2. Help make someone's holiday special by donating a new, unwrapped toy for a boy or girl; just drop it off here at the library. They've asked for no stuffed animals, please, but any other toys would be great; especially gifts for 9 to 14 year old girls or boys.  The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve will distrubute these toys to less fortunate children in the community.

Little Explorers Healthy Kid Demos

Come join the staff of Premier Athletics: Little Explorers as they jump and tumble, dance and sing.  This program incorporates music and games to inspire children to learn and grow both mentally and physically.  Caregivers and their children aged two to five are encouraged to check it out for themselves on Tuesday, December 18 at either 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM.  Please only attend one session. 

Winter Break Drop-In Craft

On Thursday, December 27 from 1:00-3:00 PM, we will be converting the Purple Room into a fun, drop-in, do-it-yourself craft space. Come in and get your creation on!

Winter Break Movie Madness!

Join us on Friday December 28, for an all-day family movie extravaganza starting at 10:00 AM with a film for our youngest patrons and gradually getting more sophisticated, until the 3:00 PM showing of Snow White and the Huntsman. You may bring pillows, snacks, even your own comfy lawn chairs if you like.

Kwanzaa Family Storytime

Join us Saturday December 29, at 11:30 AM  in the Purple Room for our family celebration of Kwanzaa and its seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. 

Tween Service Corps December 2012

Are you in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade and looking for ways to fulfill your community service requirement for school? Join us and work as our Tween Service Corps. You can earn one hour of your community service time and also have fun helping out in the Children's Department. Our next date will be Monday, December 17, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you!
