Knit Night

Join other handcrafters for an evening of sharing and learning. All ages and stages are welcome at this informal gathering on Monday, May 14 at 7:00 PM in the library Purple Room.

Step Gently Out

In celebration of Canton's Acts of Culture Week, we are pleased to present photographer Rick Lieder as he shares his beautiful book, Step Gently Out. Lieder worked with award-winning poet, Helen Frost to create an amazing 'picture' of what we can find in our own backyards if we just step gently and keep our eyes and minds wide open. You will be stunned by what you see on Tuesday, May 1st at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome.

Beginning Microsoft Word

An introduction to word processing. Learn basic Word skills including creating and formatting text, printing and saving. Attendees should already be familiar with using a mouse and keyboard.
Date: Saturday, May 19, from 1:00-2:30 PM in in the Internet Lab.

Evening English Language Learner's Conversation Group

Practice speaking English in an informal setting with Community Literacy Council volunteers the first and third Wednesdays 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the Purple Room. 

Adult Writers' Group

Interested in writing? Join other adults to share your work, get feedback and discuss the craft of writing. We will meet on Saturday, May 26 at 2:00 PM.

Starfish Family Services: Math Learning in the Home

Parents, grandparents and caregivers, join the professionals from Starfish Family Services as they discuss the importance of math during the preschool years. They will also outline materials from the home that may be used to support math learning. The program takes place on Tuesday, April 24th from 9:30-11:30 AM. Starfish Family Services also provides licensed daycare providers to watch over your children as you attend the workshop.

Popcorn Poets

This fun program will be for kids that love poems and kids who don't. We will look at "giggle poetry" for kids online, answer some riddles and vote on our favorite silly poems, while enjoying popcorn. This program is for kids third through fifth grade. Register online beginning March 26.

Honor Flight Michigan - The Legacy Project

Join us in honoring the Legacy of Michigan's World War II heroes and Honor Flight Michigan who provided their trips of a lifetime. The family-friendly documentary will tug at your heart and make you swell with pride for our fathers and grandfathers, a generation of heroes. Please bring Dad or Grandpa along on Thursday, May 3 at 7:00 PM to watch this documentary, hear stories from the people who created the organization and the veterans who lived it.

Tamil Storytime

All ages may enjoy a storytime program in Tamil presented by Sivakami Rajendran

Baby Storytime

Baby Storytime begins May 1. Designed for babies up to age 18 months with a caregiver, this interactive storytime features simple stories, songs, and fingerplays.

Living Green in Southeast Michigan

To celebrate Earth Week, we have invited Granton Brooks, the communications specialist from SEMCOG to share the many earth-friendly projects supported by SEMCOG in his Living Green in Southeast Michigan program. Did you know that they declare Ozone Action Days for our region or that they sponsor the Michigan Rideshare program or the studies of water run-off? SEMCOG impacts our community in many ways. Come see how they can help your earth-friendly everyday life on Monday, April 23 at 7:00 PM.

Mary Vangieson of the Wayne County Department of Public Services shares the need-to-know information on Composting and Healthy Lawns and gardens. Vegetarian Eating for Everyone

Are you trying to be a little healthier with your eating habits? Are you trying to save the creatures that share our world with us? Well, The Fat Chef in the Little Coat has suggestions for eating delicious, healthy food at least once a week or more. He shares his recipes for vegetarian dishes we can all love in Vegetarian Eating for Everyone. Join us as we continue our Earth Week celebrations on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 PM.

eReader Users Group

Join library staff and other eReader users as we share eBook tips and tricks in an informal environment. The group will meet Monday, April 30th, 7:00-8:00 PM in the Purple Room.

ABC Activity Time

ABC Activity Time begins the week of April 30. This is an informal session where parents, caregivers, children and babies meet together in a relaxed environment. This drop-in playtime includes sensory activities, puzzles, and matching games for children ages birth to 5, with caregiver. No registration required. Program takes place in the Community Room, unless otherwise noted. (April 30-June 9):
  • Mondays 10:30-11:00 AM and 1:30-2:00 PM
  • Tuesdays 7:30-8:00 PM
  • Wednesdays 10:30-11:00 AM and 7:30-8:00 PM
  • Thursdays 10:30-11:00 AM
  • Fridays 10:30-11:00 AM
  • Saturdays 10:30-11:00 AM in the Purple Room

Notes

  • On June 7th the Family Storytime/ABC Activity Time session will be in collaboration with Starfish Family Services Program for parents and caregivers titled Word Play: Rhymes and Other Pre-Reading Activities. The workshop is for adults and Starfish brings along licensed day care providers to watch your children if you choose
  • There will be no Activty time on June 8 (for a blood drive)

Book and Author Luncheon

Kevin Boyle, historian and author of Arc of Justice, will be appearing at Fox Hills' banquet center on Tuesday, May 29 at Noon for the 26th annual Friends of the Library Plymouth-Canton-Northville-Novi Book and Author Luncheon.

Reserve your seats, which are available using this request form, starting April 15.

The Original Animated Lorax

To wrap up our Earth Week celebrations, CPL will present a screening of the original, 1972, animated version of Dr Seuss's The Lorax. Join us on Friday, April 27 at 4:00 PM to watch the story of the greedy, truffula tree-chopping Once-lers and the brave little Lorax who speaks up for the vanishing forest. When the film is over patrons are invited to create their own truffula tree vista to brighten up their home. This program is open to families and kids of all ages.

Attracting Backyard Wildlife

Kids, do you see animals around your neighborhood and wish they’d pay your yard a visit? Join us Thursday, April 26, from 7:00-8:00 PM to continue our Earth Week celebrations and learn how to use feeders, houses, baths, and more to make your yard the happening place to be. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own nestball to attract nesting birds.

Sylvan Saturday: Math and Reading Strategies

Testing can be tough! Come to the library on Saturday April 14, from 1:00-2:30 PM and let the experts from Sylvan Learning Center give you some strategies and tips on math and reading to help boost your confidence on your next test. Appropriate for older middle school and high school students.
