Movie Mondays: Green Thumb & Game On

Join us each Monday to beat the heat and enjoy fun films in our Community Room! Each week we'll fill the day with films for kids, adults, or the whole family!

Monday, June 24, we'll give give our planet a GREEN THUMBs up and get our GAME ON with these fun summer films. We will start our day with fairies in the rainforest who are about to meet their first humans and end with the story of a football team that embraced challenges and change to triumph with a perfect season. You may bring pillows, snacks, even your own comfy lawn chairs if you like.

Bill and Ted's Excellent AdventureJoin us each Monday to beat the heat and enjoy fun films in our Community Room! Each week we'll fill the day with films for kids, adults, or the whole family!

Monday, July 8, we will BE WELL with some healthy viewing and go BACK IN TIME with some time-traveling classics. We'll start our day with a collection of stories about our favorite aardvark and end with two totally excellent dudes who ace their history assignment with the help of a very special phone booth.

You may bring pillows, snacks, even your own comfy lawn chairs if you like.

Puppets and Craft

Families with kids ages 5 and under are invited to join us for a funny puppet show and a special craft. No registration required.
Program date: Friday, July 19 at 10:00 AM in the Community Room.

'My Mitten' Kids Craft Day

K-5th Graders: Join us on Tuesday, August 6th from 2:00-3:00 PM in the Purple Room for a special Michigan-themed craft day! There will be a variety of Michigan crafts to choose from that celebrate many of the great things, from birds to lighthouses, that our state has to offer.

Traditional Yoga Basics

On Tuesday, August 6 from 4:00-4:45 PM, Thirupu Siva will teach young people from 6-16 years of age the basic asanas, building up to various intermediate poses. Please wear loose fitting clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat to work on. Registration for this program begins on May 29.

Teen Creative Writing Series

This course is completed. Check out the published stories.

Patrons aged 12-17 years old are encouraged to hone their creative writing skills during this free, fun and challenging writing series presented by Linda Weatherford Papa, Instructional Designer at University of Detroit Mercy. Participants are to register once for the entire series and attend all sessions. It will run every other Saturday during the summer and will take place from 10:00-11:15 AM on the following days: June 29, July 13, July 27 and August 10. Registration begins on May 29.

MSU Extension Service: All About Soil Tests

Our MSU Extension Service Soil Testing Informational Program will take place Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.  Learn about the positive impacts soil testing can have on your yard and garden and how to go about doing it. Also bring a plant or some seeds for our concurrent program Summer Seed and Plant Exchange! No registration required.

3D Storytelling

On August 7 from 2:00-4:00 PM, local artist and writer, Christina Smith, will teach kids aged 9-12 years old her technique for writing a story, building vocabulary and then using around-the-house items to create a 3D Storybox to show their story visually. Space is limited. Registration begins on May 29.

August Creatapillars

Are you a creative kid? This crafty program is tailored to kids who are 7 to 10 years old. Let your creative side flow in our program, Creatapillars. Our project for August will be crafty and summery. We will meet on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 from 7:00-7:45 PM. Registration begins Monday, July 29, 2013.

Monday, August 5, we will celebrate our final Movie Monday by with films about BEing CREATIVE. We will begin our day exploring the 2nd Dimension and end it with a look at London's most elusive and intriguing street artist. You may bring pillows, snacks, even your own comfy lawn chairs if you like.

Six Little Ducks Storytime

Kids ages 3-5, with a caregiver, register online to join us for a fun duck-themed program with ducky stories, a simple craft and a tasty snack.

Captain Luis Montalvan returned home from his second tour of duty in Iraq, having survived stab wounds, a traumatic brain injury, and three broken vertebrae. But the pressures of civilian life and his injuries proved too much to bear. Physical disabilities, agoraphobia, and crippling PTSD drove him to the edge of suicide. That's when he met Tuesday - his best friend forever. Tuesday came with his own history of challenges: from the Puppies Behind Bars program, to a home for troubled boys, to the streets of Manhattan, Tuesday blessed many lives on his way to Luis. Until Tuesday unforgettably twines the story of man and dog. Come to the library on Wednesday, June 5 from 6:30-8:30 PM to hear Captain Montalvan tell his story of finding his best friend and partner in life, his dog Tuesday. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the program.

ELL Book Club

Advanced English Language Learners — join us to read and discuss books in English. Books will be discussed until finished. Meets in Group Study Room A every other Friday from 1:00-2:00 PM, beginning October 4 and October 18.

ELL Conversation Group

Practice speaking English in an informal setting with Community Literacy Council volunteers June Fridays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM in the Purple Room.

June Creatapillars

Are you a creative kid? This crafty program is tailored to kids who are 7 to 10 years old. Let your creative side flow in our program, Creatapillars. For June, we will be making ways to feed our flying friends. Peanut Butter will be used in these projects. We will meet on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 7:00-7:45 PM. Registration begins Monday, May 24, 2013.

Walgreens BP Checks

Join us on the first day of Connect Your Summer, our summer reading program, for a free blood pressure check from our partners at the Canton Walgreens. Many activities will take place in our Community Room on June 17 to celebrate the beginning of summer. This one might actually save your life. Walgreens will be here from 2:00 to 3:00 PM so come get checked out.

The K Club

Children ages 4-6 who are pre-k or in kindergarten are invited to this program designed especially for them. We will have stories, a snack and a craft designed around celebrating our great state of Michigan! Don't miss out on this great time at the library on Tuesday, May 21 4:00-4:45 PM.
