Life on the Ohio and Erie Canal (In Song)

Captain Pearl R. Nye: Life on the Ohio and Erie Canal captures the culture and music of the men, women, and children who worked and lived along the Ohio and Erie Canal. Nye devoted considerable time preserving its songs and stories. The 75 songs, sung here by Nye, were recorded by John, Alan, and Elizabeth Lomax, and Ivan Walton, between June 1937 and September 1938. Song transcriptions by Library staff are available on the Web site along with photographs, and personal letters Nye sent to the Library from July 1937 to October 1944. {Library of Congress, Apr. 2} The first recording in this collection, House Carpenter, is also available in the CPL collection, on Basket of light, a CD by the Scottish-English super group, Pentangle.
