Labor Day (September 3, 2007)

Baby Safety Month
While moms and dads are always thinking about the safety of their children, and especially little babies who are exploring everything for the first time, September is an entire month devoted to Baby Safety. Here are some websites with helpful information on how to keep your bundles of joy safe.

• Parents.com offers many ways to keep your babies and other children safe. Just click on the button for Babies to get great ideas or type “baby safety” in the search box for helpful hints and articles.
• Babycenter.com offers helpful tips on its baby safety index page
• The U.S. Product and Safety Commission offers tips and alerts

Hispanic Heritage Month
In order to help us gain a better understanding of the many cultures that we are surrounded by on a day to day basis, Hispanic Heritage Month (September) gives us the chance to learn a bit more about the people and culture of the Hispanic peoples.

• Fact Monster offers a site covering information on the history behind Hispanic Heritage Month, along with links to sites that discuss famous Hispanic peoples and background on the countries that form the Latin or Hispanic areas.
• This site, put together by Scholastic, has a host of information on different aspects of the Hispanic World.
• This last site is home to the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

International Literacy Day (September 8, 2007)
Literacy and the act of being literate is important all across the globe. Increasing ones ability to read and be a literate and informed individual is an almost universal goal. Here are some sites to explain International Literacy Day and also give suggestions on how one could become a more literate individual.

• Information and support material for the day from the UN.
• ABC Canada has a nice website that gives suggestions for activities that can be done to help celebrate literacy and International Literacy Day.
• International Reading Association offers advice on why reading and reading aloud to children is so important in their growth and learning.
