Friends of the Library

Frequently Asked Questions
About the Friends of the Canton Public Library

First of all, who are these people called "Friends" and why are they so loved by patrons as well as staff of the library?

They're people like you, your family members, your neighbors and others in the community who support the library's goals and services. They are active advocates of the library and help raise community awareness and appreciation of its many services and resources. Through their efforts, individually and as a group, the Friends help bridge the gap between a good library and being recognized as a great library.

What do the Friends actually do?

The Friends operate Secondhand Prose, the used bookstore, with money raised going to support a wide variety of activities. For example:

  • Adult Contemporary Book Discussion Group;
  • Support Summer Reading Club;
  • Purchase needed equipment (computer, printers, etc.);
  • Purchase books and special collections;
  • Support youth and adult programs;
  • Host an annual author lunch with other Friends groups;
  • Homebound book delivery;
  • Support a sculpture fund;
  • Donate annual scholarships to library employees.
