Reciprocal Borrowing 2012 - Board Presentation

At the Board of Trustees meeting on February 21, 2013, Circulation Services Department Head Nancy Szczepanski provided an overview of reciprocal borrowing. Nancy reviewed 2012 checkouts from our library by residents of other communities, and vice-versa, particularly since the board approval of changes to our Circulation Policy last year. The updated policy affirmed our commitment to sharing with and supporting our neighbors while preserving primary access to Canton taxpayers.

Nancy's presentation, attached here as a .pdf, gave the Board good background on checkouts of our materials by patrons of other libraries, and I hope that you find it useful and interesting, also.

Eye Glasses Needed

According to the World Health Organization, 284 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they do not have access to or cannot afford care. In some countries, a pair of eyewear costs more than a month's salary.

Now through April 8, students from the PCEP chapter of the National Honor Society are collecting eyewear for OneSight, a charitable organization dedicated to providing free eye care to those in need. You can drop your donation of prescription glasses in the collection box near the Reception Desk.

Fourth Annual Library Diaper Drive Aims for the 100,000 Mark

CANTON, MI— The Canton Public Library is counting on the generous people of Metro Detroit to come through again for the fourth Stuff the Truck Diaper Drive, November 14 and 15. Over the last three years, the library has collected more than 75,000 diapers to benefit the Canton-based Detroit Area Diaper Bank, in the biggest diaper drive in Michigan. This year, they hope to top the 100,000 mark.

The library will accept diapers of any size or brand, newborn through adult, including pull-ups, swim diapers and open packages, from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on November 14 and 15. The Detroit Area Diaper Bank, a nonprofit charitable organization, will dispense them to SE Michigan partner agencies serving people in crisis.

"Many of our patrons are young families and the elderly and we are sensitive to their needs" states library director Eva Davis. "A lack of diapers impacts the lives of babies and toddlers and their parents, people with disabilities and the elderly. Without an adequate supply of diapers, these people are homebound, unable to work or attend school, are isolated and face health issues from rashes to staph infections."

The Diaper Bank’s 4th Annual Fall Diaper Drive aims to collect 200,000 diapers by Thanksgiving. As Marybeth Levine, executive director and founder of the Detroit Area Diaper Bank, explains, "Safety net programs like WIC, Food Stamps and Medicare do not pay for or provide diapers, leaving those with the fewest resources even fewer options." Since April 2009, the Diaper Bank has donated 1,441,130 diapers to over 45 organizations.

Fat Chef in a Little Coat is again donating their catering truck for the event. "We are so grateful to the Hulett family and their continued generosity in allowing us to use their truck. Fat Chef in a Little Coat Catering is an amazing example of a local business supporting charitable efforts to make a real difference in their community," says Levine.

The library has seen the number of donated diapers grow each year, with people driving from all over southeast Michigan to drop off contributions. Last year's event hauled in over 30,000 diapers. This year's drive is receiving support from Eriksson Elementary School Girl Scout Troop 640, who distributed 1,000 flyers throughout Canton.

'I’m hoping for 35,000 diapers this year,' says Levine. 'And they’ll go out to partner agencies as fast as I get them in.'

Pennies from Heaven

Do you have a pile of spare pennies? Consider donating them to the Pennies from Heaven program to support the Canton Goodfellows "No Canton Child Without a Christmas." Bring your pennies — or any spare change — to the lobby of the Canton Summit from 10:00 AM to Noon on Saturday, October 27 and meet other Goodfellows and Canton Observer staff. Enjoy a glass of cider and a doughnut. Your change can make a change for the Canton Goodfellows this year. This project honors Nancy Spencer, a long-time volunteer with the Canton Goodfellows and The Friends of the Canton Public Library, who passed away last week.

Library Volunteers Receive President's Service Award

Proud friends and family gathered at the Canton Public Library Board of Trustees August meeting as 11 library volunteers were awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Don Turner, CPL Board President, presented a bronze service star, certificate and letter signed by President Obama to recipients Morgan Benjamin, Quinn Ebner, Betty Hellmers, Lisa Kluka, Diane Miner, Gabrielle Mussehl, Jason Pino, Ilene Saunders, Carolyn Sumner, Sandra Walczak and Xiao Zhu.

“These people demonstrated an undeniable passion for a library that we all love so much,” said Turner. “I know that I speak not just for the board, not just for the leadership of the library, but really for all the citizens of Canton when I say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the work you’ve done for the Canton Public Library, truly a jewel in the state of Michigan because of folks like you.”

Scanning resources for digital archives, cutting scrap paper and shelving books were just a few of the tasks performed by the 11 volunteers, who accumulated 1282 service hours in 2011, as part of a volunteer corps that logged a total of 4397 hours.

The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

“Volunteers help the library immensely by performing necessary tasks and allowing our staff to focus on essential service areas. We are extremely grateful for their dedication and value their contribution,” says library director Eva Davis. “They have played an important role in our ability to handle our shrinking budget without cutting hours.”

Circulation Policy Update for Non-Residents

Beginning August 1, 2012 our circulation policy for cardholders of other TLN-member libraries will change. We have standardized our circulation policy so that TLN users may have a maximum of 10 items checked out per card. As before, these items do not include video games.

This change allows us to continue to provide service to other communities while focusing our resources on the Canton community that supports us. We're happy to allow residents of communities outside of Plymouth-Canton to use all of our resources while in our library; however, beginning August 1, check outs will be limited to 10 items per card.

DIA Inside|Out Art in Canton

We are pleased to be part of the Detroit Institute of Arts Inside|Out program, which brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA's collection to the streets. There are six pieces displayed in Canton, including this one, Young Woman with a Violin by Italian painter Orazio Gentileschi. This painting depicts Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, and was created in 1612. The artist's daughter is the model; the painting is a gift of Mrs. Edsel B. Ford.

Memorial Day Supply Drive a Huge Success

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to provide over 20 boxes of supplies and $330 in gift cards and donations for homeless veterans, collected through our Memorial Day drive. The Veterans Hospital of Ann Arbor volunteer specialist Sandy Jacobs packed her van with your donations to distribute to homeless and needy veterans in the area. Thank you for your contributions.

Memorial Day Supply Drive to Benefit Veterans

Before we celebrate Memorial Day, let's commemorate. Please help CPL as we collect items to be donated to the VA Hospital of Ann Arbor for distribution to homeless veterans. Donations will be appreciatively accepted beginning Thursday, May 10 through Thursday, May 31 at the Reception Desk.
Suggested donations include:

Rolls of Lifesavers (or other hard candy)
Rice Krispies bars (or granola bars, etc.)
Plastic utensils (knives, forks, spoons)
Napkins
Ritz snack mix (or other trail mix)
Easy-open cans of tuna, chicken or other meats

Other general requests include $5-10 gift cards to Wendy's or McDonald's; cans of coffee (regular or decaf); prepaid telephone calling cards; new crossword puzzles and word search books.

Carpet Replacement in Internet Lab Complete

Bestselling Author Jeffrey Zaslow to Appear at Library

CANTON, MI—Journalist and bestselling author Jeffrey Zaslow will speak Thursday, February 23 at 7:00 PM at the Canton Public Library. Zaslow’s newest novel, The Magic Room: A Story About the Love We Wish for our Daughters, debuted in January and recounts the hopes, dreams and transformations of thousands of women who visit Becker’s Bridal Salon in Fowler, Michigan.

He is also the author of The Girls from Ames: A Story of Women and Friendship and coauthor of The Last Lecture with Randy Pausch, and more recently, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope with Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists twice named Zaslow the best columnist in a newspaper with more than 100,000 circulation. In 2008, he received the Distinguished Column Writing Award from the New York Newspaper Publishers Association.

Zaslow’s appearance at the Canton Public Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Canton Public Library. It is free and open to the public. The library is located at 1200 S. Canton Center Road in Canton, MI.
