Use your homegrown produce to create Luscious, Low-Fat, Lightning-Quick Meals, a course created and lead by a certified dietician. Continue your summertime self care routine through exploring Introduction to Natural Health and Healing, a course that focuses on relaxation, diet, and natural remedies for common ailments.

A recent PEW study indicates older Americans (65+) are embracing technology; approximately two-thirds of them go online regularly and many now own smartphones. Not surprising that usage is greater among adults with higher income ($75,000) and are college educated.  Interestingly though, is some 34% of older internet users say they have little to no confidence in their ability to use electronic devices to perform online tasks, while 48% of seniors say that this statement describes them very well: “When I get a new electronic device, I usually need someone else to set it up or show me how to use it.”

Bitcoin is a revolutionary new currency that was created anonymously in 2009. Transactions are made with no middle men – meaning, no banks! There are no transaction fees and no need to give your real name. More merchants are beginning to accept bitcoins. You can buy services, pizza or even manicures. Bitcoins are earned when people compete by using computers to solve complex mathematical problems. Currently, a winner is awarded 25 bitcoins every 10 minutes. OR, one can buy bitcoins at a bitcoin exchange using various currencies.

Senior Discounts & Deals

Looking for ways to save money?   Senior discounts for a variety of services and goods are readily available.  Members of AARP are eligible for discounts simply by showing their membership card.  The Senior List is another resource for discounts available to individuals as young as 50 years of age.   Canton Township's Club 55 hosts monthly events and trips. Those over 60 can lunch at Senior Center daily (Reservations are required by 12 pm the day prior by calling 734/394-5485 ext. 1253).

SAT preparation courses can be costly, but all Gale Courses are free with your Canton Public Library card. Beginning in April 2017, the Michigan Department of Education will offer the SAT to juniors. Prepare for this shift with Gale's SAT Preparation course. This course will address specific question types, discuss time management and anxiety reducing techniques, and explain scoring.

This course is a helpful way to familiarize yourself with the 2016 redesigned test format, understand included content, and better prepare for the exam-taking experience. The next set of classes will begin on Wednesday, April 12. If April does not work for you, there is a new session beginning each month. Learn on your own schedule, and receive a certificate of completion when you've finished. 

If you or someone you know is struggling to catch up in the age of smart phones, apps and social media, TechBoomers can help! TechBoomers is designed with Seniors in mind to help Internet Beginners understand popular websites and apps, offering multi-part tutorials that explain things simply and easily.

TechBoomers also offers tutorials on basic Internet Safety and other online topics. Recently, the site put together a Guide to Fake News, to help users understand what they're reading and evaluate the source, preventing the spread of misinformation.
