Coraline
by Neil Gaiman
Coraline moves into a new house, finds a secret door and realizes that she has another set of parents in a new world. Later, her real parents disappear behind the door and she has to get them back. I liked this book even though it was kind of freaky! Because of Winn Dixie
by Kate Di Camillo
Opal and her father, the Preacher, move to a new town where she finds a dog and names him Winn Dixie. She makes new friends and tries to get over her mother's leaving. I really want a dog and this book was great. The Same Stuff as Stars
by Katherine Paterson
Angel and her brother Bernie are abandoned by their by their mom at their great-grandma's house. Angel finds a school for her and her brother and makes friends with the town librarian. When Bernie is taken from school by their mom, Angel has no idea where he is, and has to take care of her grandma alone. This book was sad, but I really enjoyed it. Ida B: And Her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and (Possibly) Save the World
by Katherine Hannigan
Ida B. is a happy, homeschooled girl until her mom gets cancer. Then, her father needs to sell part of their land, which she loves, and Ida B. has to go to public school, which she hates. This book was sad and happy at the same time. Holes
by Louis Sachar
Stanley Yelnats is walking home from school and is hit in the head with a stolen pair of basketball shoes. After he is blamed for stealing the shoes, he goes to juvenile court and is sent to Camp Greenlake where he digs holes 5'x5' all day long. This book was really cool and I like the movie too (available as a DVD or Videocassette).
