Questions
About Fave Fives? Our FAQ Has the Answers!
What
are Fave Fives?
Fave Fives
are lists of five suggested titles—books, audiobooks, music
CDs, films and documentaries, even CD-ROMs, or any combination thereof—that
we want library users to know about. Each list is built around a
specific theme, chosen by the person submitting the list. Fave
Fives are intended to be a fun forum of personal favorites.
Check the lists. Some are "mainstream," while others are
more esoteric, offbeat and unique. On average, we're adding a new
list every week. We hope you enjoy them and try some of the reading,
listening and viewing suggestions.
Who
can provide a Fave Five list?
Virtually anyone, individually
or jointly (for example, with a friend or other members of a book
discussion group). We would love to see your list! You can send
us a top-five list via our online Fave
Five Submission Form, or you can pick up a brochure
and printed form when visiting the library (stop at our Reference
Desk), then send us a list whenever you're ready.
As a special bonus to
Canton Public Library users (not including library staff), if you
have a Fave Five list posted online, you'll receive
a gift certificate to Secondhand
Prose, the library's very popular used bookstore!
What's
the history behind Fave Fives?
The Canton Public Library
launched Fave Fives in October 2004 as an alternate
form of staff recommendations. However, the concept dates back to
1942 when the BBC unveiled a feature known as Desert
Island Discs. Celebrities picked (and still pick)
the songs or music albums they would want to have with them if ever
stranded on a desert island. The National Book Foundation offers
a similar service called The
Book That Changed My Life.
Does
the library offer other lists of recommendations?
Absolutely! Don't miss
our BookLetters
page, with links to bestsellers lists, reviews and author profiles.
You can sign up to receive Fave
Fives by Email Newsletter, as well as more than 20
other newsletters.
Also, check our Staff
Recommendations page for our "best-of" tips
from year to year. Included are fiction and nonfiction books, audiobooks,
plus movies.
