The Headmistress by Angela Thirkell
I love Angela Thirkell as a writer. She has a wonderful way with words and is simply funny. Her wry sense of humor and tendency to speak to the writer reminds me of some older writers like Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. The majority of her novels are set in England around World War 2, so I feel like I am learning history while I read. In this particular book, the complications of those at home during war time really became real to me. Yes, it felt a little like reading a Dowton Abbey episode. But don't let that encourage/discourage you. It's simply a good book.
