Lunch & a Book August 2014

 On Thursday, August 14 at noon, we will be discussing:

The light between oceans: a novel by M.L. Stedman — After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and becomes the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings his young wife Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom's judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. Returning to the mainland when she is two, Tom and Isabel are reminded that there are other people in the world and discover that their choice has devastated one of them.

Stories Spun Around the World

Run, run as fast as you can, can you catch a gingerbread man? What about a rolling rice cake? What about a speeding gordita? How about a matzo ball boy? Join us on July 29 from 7:00-8:00 PM and enjoy a classic tale as it spins around the world, create some crafts, and share some snacks.

This program is for kids ages 4-8 with their caregivers. Registration begins on May 26.  

Cirque Amongus

A Cirque Amongus Show is a surprising combination of comedy, circus skills and audience participation as 2 or more daring and skillful performers put on a display of teamwork and perseverance guaranteed to amaze and delight all who watch.  Join us in welcoming the Cirque performers on August 4 from 2:00-2:45 PM

Tanabata Festival

Join us July 19th as we celebrate Tanabata, a Japanese Star Festival. This festival celebrates the once-a-year meeting of star lovers, the Ox Herder and the Weaver Princess, who are separated by the Milky Way during the other 364 days of the year.

To help us celebrate, members of the Japan Society of Detroit Women's Club will present the Tanabata story using Kamishibai, a Japanese form of storytelling. We will also participate in the Tanabata custom of writing wishes on long strips of colorful paper and then tying them to tree branches in the hopes that they will come true. In addition children will have the opportunity to try on Yukatas or summer kimonos.

This event will take place Saturday July 19th at 11:00 am.

Zumba from Around the World

Zumba is a fitness class that combines dance and fitness. It is all the rage nowadays. This dance mingles Latin and International music with a fun and effective workout system. Dance routines like Cumbia, Merengue, Salsa, Mambo, Bhangra, Hip-Hop and Flamenco are used in this class. The fusion of Latin dance rhythms and moves provides an excellent group exercise experience.
Join us for a lively, fun session of Zumba on Saturday, July 19 at 10:00 AM.

De-stress with Kundalini Yoga

In this class we will become aware of stressors and how they  influence our communication, our relationships and our performance. Kundalini Yoga instructor Rajwant Kaur Khalsa will teach you to do Yoga and meditation to release the stress so we can put up with life's challenges without losing ourselves.
Join us for an hour and a half class of Kundalini Yoga on July 2, 7:00 PM to add peace into your everyday life. Wear comfortable clothing and do not eat before class. Please bring a bottle of water.

Total Wellness with Tai Chi

The goal of this program is to achieve total wellness of mind and body with the use of the ancient Chinese art of Tai Chi.

Join Julie Burt, Head Coach, Personal Trainer, Fitness and Tai Chi Instructor in finding your energy as you refresh and strengthen your body. Learn a set of simple flowing Tai Chi movements that will enhance your health and fitness. This workout will also let you cultivate your internal energy for total wellness. Join us on Thursday, July 31 at 7:30 PM.
