who knew vhs

VHS (Video Home System) is a widely-adopted videocassette recording ( VCR ) technology that was developed by Japan Victor Company (JVC) and put on the market in 1976. It uses magnetic tape 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) in width. Originally, the abbreviation VHS stood for Vertical Helical Scan, and was later changed as the technology gained in popularity.

Read the book "The Snow Goose"

I read a book to earn this badge:
"Snow Goose" by Paul Allico
This book--both written during WWII and set in WWII--is about a reclusive artist who lived at a lighthouse on England's coastline. He cares for an injured Snow Goose and befriends the local girl who brought the goose to him. He breaks out of seclusion to help save his fellow countrymen--soldiers trapped by Germans on the shores of Dunkirk. A short but remarkable story.

Watched the movie "Hyde Park on Hudson"

The movie takes place not long before the U.S. sent its troops to Europe during WWII, and FDR is hosting King Albert and Queen Elizabeth at his retreat home he called Hyde Park on Hudson. Much of the movie centers on FDR's relationship with his mistress Daisy.

Watched the movie "Cloud Atlas"

Read a Fantastic Book about the Civil War

I read a book to earn this badge:
Two Miserable Presidents by Steve Sheinkin

Two miserable presidents: everything your schoolbooks didn't tell you about the Civil War by Steve Sheinkin ; illustrated by Tim Robinson — Seriously, put this book on hold, because you'll want it as soon as I return it. Loved this book about the Civil War (we're still in the midst of its 150th anniversary, by the way). Sheinkin manages to hit all the high points I remember learning about, while also filling in much more interesting details. He adds personal information about the more famous folks involved in the war in addition to telling stories about ordinary people. I'm really digging this author, who also wrote Bomb, The Notorious Benedict Arnold, and others (seriously - none of these should show available in the library catalog - check them out now).
