New Breeds Added to AKC

Two new dog breeds were added to the American Kennel Club's recognized list of purebreds; the American Hairless Terrier and the Sloughi. These new additions brings the number of purebreds in the registry to 189, one of the largest in the world. Now recognized by the AKC, this will allow the new breeds to compete in events, such as The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show which will be presented live from Madison Square Garden in NYC on February 15 and 16.

The number of breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club is 189, but it is far from having the largest or most inclusive list of recognized breeds in the world. Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the major international organization, recognizes 343 distinct breeds, all of which are considered purebred. The Kennel Club of Great Britain recognizes 215 breeds. AKC does not even recognize the largest number of breeds in the United States, as the United Kennel Club recognizes over 300--though AKC is the more prominent of the two major kennel clubs in the US.
