Oprah's most recent selection is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Not only do we have the English translations, we have El amor en los tiempos del colera in the original Spanish in our International Language Collection.
Snow White...The College Life
Sydney White is a modern retelling of an enchanted fairy tale with a twist. Amanda Byrnes is charming and funny as the title character, whose freshman year at college sorrority, goes from the pledging process to positive activism for all social outcasts on campus. The movie is now playing in theaters.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) has added a really useful character search. If you're wondering who all the actors are who have ever played a particular character, it's easy to find out. Just select "character" from the drop-down menu, type the character's name into the search box and you'll get a handy list. Try Batman, Queen Elizabeth, or any other movie character you like. Knit Night is Tonight
If you like to knit, hang out with knitters or just talk about knitting, drop in tonight for Knit Nights with Anne at 7 p.m. CPL's own Anne Heidemann hosts this monthly gathering for knitters of all skill levels. Come share a pattern, show off your latest project or trade information about yarn sources. It's a fun, casual evening of knitting and chatting. No registration, just stop in the Community Room.

President Signs Overhaul of Student Aid
On Thursday, September 27, the President signed the College Cost Reduction Act almost two months and a week after the Senate approved the bill. The law raises grants for low-income college students, offers forgiveness on student loans for graduates who work in public service professions like teachers for 10 years or more and limits monthly payments on federally-backed loans.

It looks to be a perfect day for it, too, with forecasts predicting sun and a high in the low seventies.
Fall Harvest at Canton Farmer's Market
For fresh produce, food, plants, crafts and entertainment, visit the Canton Farmer's Market every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Right now, lots of fresh veggies are in and they look and taste so much better than those at the grocery store. Beautiful fall chrysanthemums and pumpkins are in, too. The market is located at the historical Bartlett-Travis house on the east side of Ridge Road, north of Cherry Hill.
Hot Dancers From France
Check out that YouTube video of Will & Mava, teen boogie woogie dancers from France, but who are coming to Michigan to perform with Bob Baldori and Bob Seeley, Michigan-based super boogie woogie pianists known the world over. It's on October 20 in Okemos, and will be filmed as part of an upcoming documentary, Boogie Stomp! Incredible dancers!
Want to recycle your computer equipment?
This Saturday, September 29, the Wayne County Department of the Environment is accepting old computers, CPUs, monitors, fax/scanners, copiers, printers and related peripherals. The equipment will be refurbished to help individuals with disabilities through a relationship with the county, Goodwill Industries and Dell Computer's RECONNECT Michigan initiative. Take your equipment to the east lot of the Livonia City Hall, 33000 Civic Center Drive (south of Five Mile, east of Farmington Rd.) between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information, call 313-326-3936.
President's Speech on NCLB Renewal
Visiting a New York City school today, President Bush asked Congress not to "go backward when it comes to educational excellence." He said new national test results (which were released on Monday) showed elementary and middle schoolers posted solid gains in math, but more modest improvements in reading. The President emphasized that the No Child Left Behind Act is working -- and deserves to be renewed.
Male Teachers and the Lack Thereof
The National Education Association reported that the number of male teachers is at a 40-year low. Of the 3 million teachers in this country, only 750,000 are male.
