Prevent Colds and Flu

While cold & flu season may be a few months away, it’s never too early to talk about prevention. Taking a proactive approach is the best way to avoid germs and maintain good health. On September 30 from 7:00-8:00 PM, Arsala Bakhtyar, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician from Oakwood Healthcare System, will be sharing important tips and tricks for keeping children and adults healthy and thriving during peak cold and flu season.

Dr. Bakhtyar is a board certified pediatrician who completed a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases. She provides care for patients from infancy to adolescence at an office located in Oakwood Healthcare Center – Canton, at 7330 N. Canton Center Road.

Flu shots will NOT be available at this program but WILL be available at our Flu Shot Clinic on Tuesday, October 1 from 12:00-4:00 PM. Brought to us by Walgreens.

Starfish presents: Sensory Issues in Early Childhood

On Thursday, September 26 from 6:30-8:00 PM a speaker from Starfish Family Services will present Sensory Issues in Early Childhood. Come learn about the different sensory motor activities that can improve focus and attention in early childhood. Find out how sensory input can improve function and play. Presented by Melissa Gray, a Registered and Licensed Occupational Therapist.

Starfish Family Services: Organize Your Playroom

On September 4 from 6:30-8:30 PM, Starfish Family Services will present Organizing Your Playroom. Participants will learn strategies for equipping their play space to encourage easy clean up. They will also learn how to label and store materials so children can find and return them after play. These programs are developed for parents, grandparents, daycare providers and any other adults who care for children. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's daycare professionals.

Traditional Yoga Basics

On Tuesday, September 3 from 4:00-4:45 PM, Thirupu Siva will teach young people from 6-16 years of age the basic asanas, building up to various intermediate poses. Please wear loose fitting clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat to work on. Registration for this program begins on August 20.

Starfish Family Services: Making Play Room Materials

On August 22 from 6:30-8:30 PM, Starfish Family Services will present Making Playroom Materials from Everyday Items. Participants will identify natural, real, recycled and scrap materials for your play room, as well as make materials to take back to their play room setting. These programs are developed for parents, grandparents, daycare providers and any other adults who care for children. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's daycare professionals.

How to Build a Birdhouse

On August 18 from 12:00-2:00 PM join Kyle Davison, local Eagle Scout-to-be, as he instructs on how to build birdhouses and creates a natural habitat around our library pond. Kyle will also share his knowledge of bat and butterfly houses as well as the local creatures that reside within them. The program will take place under the tents in the back of the library and many of the birdhouses will be hung around the library's pond to shelter our local flying critters. All construction materials will be provided. Children five-12 years old and their caretakers are welcome. One birdhouse kit per family. Registration by one family member only is required and begins July 25.

Hummingbirds Music Together

You and your child, 0-5 years old, will Toot Toot and Chugga-Chug in "The Train Song", layer voices with the seaside-themed "She Sells Sea Shells"; explore instruments in "All Around the Kitchen", and sing and swing to "Allee Galloo" with Hummingbirds Music Together. Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. This program will be presented by staff from the Grosse Pointe Music Academy of Canton on Tuesday, August 20 from 10:00-10:45 AM.

Hummingbirds Music Together: Teddy Bear Picnic

Hummingbirds Music Together is hosting a Teddy Bear Picnic at the library for children 0-7 years old with their parent or caregiver. Bring your favorite stuffed friend to sing teddy bear songs and make teddy bear music together! Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. This program will be presented by staff from the Grosse Pointe Music Academy of Canton on Tuesday, August 27 from 10:00-11:00 AM.

STEM Science - Lead the Way

Local high school student Maha Zahid recognized that when entering high school many of her friends were struggling with the application of basic science concepts. As a result, she developed a science enrichment program geared towards middle school students (grades 6th- 8th) who strive to get a head start in their high school science experience and gain more knowledge of innovative careers options in the field of medicine and engineering. This program will focus on fundamental science concepts including chemistry, biochemistry, cells, human body systems and physics that are beneficial for students to know before entering high school. With every concept students will complete hands on activities that will enrich their learning experience. This is an 8 week program that will run every Friday from 4:00-5:45 PM. The first session takes place on August 2 and the last is on September 20. Space is limited so register today! (This program will repeat starting October 4)

Farmer's Market w/guest author Shanda Trent

As you may know, we hold storytimes at the Canton Farmer's Market on various Sundays throughout the summer. What you may not know is that on Sunday, August 4 at 10:30 AM we will host local Ann Arbor author Shanda Trent as she presents her book Farmer's Market Day. This book follows a little girl as she explores the wonders of the local Farmer's Market searching for the perfect treat. Join us in welcoming Ms Trent to the Canton Farmer's Market!

Starfish Family Services: Kitchen Art Fun

Parents, grand parents, preschool teachers and daycare providers, come to Starfish Family Services workshop, Kitchen Art Fun. On July 18 from 9:30-11:30 AM, Starfish's trained presenters will describe art development in young children and strategies to talk children's art. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's licensed daycare professionals.

3D Storytelling

On August 7 from 2:00-4:00 PM, local artist and writer, Christina Smith, will teach kids aged 9-12 years old her technique for writing a story, building vocabulary and then using around-the-house items to create a 3D Storybox to show their story visually. Space is limited. Registration begins on May 29.

Real Heroes Read Book Talk and Author Visit

On July 2, from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM, Michigan authors David Anthony and Charles David Clasman will introduce us to their super fun and exciting chapter book series, Heroes A2Z. Set in Traverse City, Michigan, this series follows twins Abigail and Andrew and their baby sister, Zoe as they face exciting adventures, mind boggling mysteries and don't forget the aliens! Books will be available for purchase and authors will be available to sign them, but there will also be free book giveaways, too. So come on in to hear about Superhero kids fighting crime before bedtime.

On June 11 from 9:30-11:30 AM join Starfish Family Services highly trained staff as they present the key to Caregiver and Family Relationships. Participants will learn how to resolve concerns about working with families and create positive, open communication strategies for building relationships between families and their child care providers. This program is open to parents, grandparents and caregivers. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's licensed daycare professionals.

Ms Carissa Rocks!

Carissa Knoles has been strumming to the beat of her own guitar since the young age of 14. When a guitar playing crush said, “girls don’t really play guitar,” she went out and bought one the very next day and has been rocking happily ever after! Since graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Children and Families from the University of Michigan in May 2010, Carissa has combined her knack for music and her passion for Early Childhood into the Music with Ms. Carissa program. Carissa has written her own original songs for the imaginative minds of the young and the young at heart. Join us in welcoming Ms. Carissa on July 30 from 10:00-11:00 AM. Although Ms Carissa generally plays to the 5 and under crowd, all ages are welcome to rock out!
