Sylvan Saturdays: ACT Test Prep

Sylvan Saturdays are back Saturday, November 9, from 9:30 AM-1:30 PM. Teens can attend this workshop, an introductory ACT Prep course, that will give students some tips and strategies for scoring higher on the ACT. It will also include a full length practice test with scoring. You must attend the entire session. Registration required.

Traditional Yoga Basics

On Tuesday, November 5 from 4:30-5:15 PM, Thirupu Siva will teach young people from 6-16 years of age the basic asanas, building up to various intermediate poses. Please wear loose fitting clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat to work on. If you have long hair, please tie it back. Registration for this program begins on October 22.

Starfish Family Services: Reading with Preschoolers

On November 5 from 6:30-8:30 PM, Starfish Family Services will present Reading with Preschoolers. Participants will learn and pracatice ways to make storybook reading an interactive and enjoyable experience. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's daycare professionals.

Read with a Dog!

Kids and Tweens in grades K-6, improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a Canine Good Citizen. Sign up begins at 6:25 PM at the Children's Desk and is on a first come, first served basis. Sessions start at 10 minutes per sitting.

Starfish Family Services: Caregiver Interactions

On October 23 from 9:30-11:30 AM, Starfish Family Services will present Caregiver Interactions. Participants will learn the importance of clear communication between children and adults and learn techniques to enhance these interactions. CPL's 2013 LEGO Dream House Award Reception

Canton kids of all ages have envisioned their Dream House and brought them to life by LEGO. On Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29 come to the Community Room and admire the fantastic LEGO Dream House Contest entries and vote for your fan favorite. On Sunday September, 29 at 4:00 PM, we will host an awards reception for these great creations. Join us!

STEM Science - Lead the Way

Local high school student Maha Zahid recognized that when entering high school many of her friends were struggling with the application of basic science concepts. As a result, she developed a science enrichment program geared towards middle school students (grades 6th- 8th) who strive to get a head start in their high school science experience and gain more knowledge of innovative careers options in the field of medicine and engineering. This program will focus on fundamental science concepts including chemistry, biochemistry, cells, human body systems and physics that are beneficial for students to know before entering high school. With every concept students will complete hands on activities that will enrich their learning experience. This is an 8 week program that will run every Friday from 4:00-5:45 PM. The first session takes place on October 4 and the last is on November 22. Registration begins September 20 and space is limited!

Talking with Parents: Literacy Struggles

Drs. Lauren Katz and Joanne Pierson from the Literacy, Language, and Learning Institute (3LI), will hold a Q & A with parents about the language and literacy difficulties experienced by children, teens, and college students. Both Katz and Pierson are speech-language pathologists with doctorates in Education with a focus in literacy and learning disabilities. They have years of experience in conducting diagnostic assessments and providing intervention for students of all ages whose language and/or literacy problems, including dyslexia, are affecting academic performance. On October 21 from 7:00-8:00 PM they will help patrons recognize literacy struggles and offer strategies and solutions to turn those struggles into success. Bring your questions!

The Art of Roughhousing

Anthony T. DeBenedet, MD speaks regionally and nationally on play, health, and parenting topics. He was a featured speaker at TEDxDetroit 2011 for his talk Playing For Our Future and at TEDxEMU 2012 for his talk Playing For Our Health. He is also coauthor of The Art of Roughhousing: Good Old-Fashioned Horseplay and Why Every Kid Needs It (Quirk Books, 2011), a parenting book about the importance of parent–child physical play. The Art of Roughhousing has received hundreds of media mentions and been translated into four foreign languages. He lives in Ann Arbor, MI where he stamps out gastrointestinal disease with a colonscope, and enjoys embarking on make-believe pirate-princess adventures with his wife and three daughters, learning new magic tricks and shooting hoops.
Join Dr. DeBendet on October 10, from 7:00-8:00 PM as he discusses his book and gives tips on fun, physical, healthy ways to connect with our children.

How to Raise a Healthy Family

Families must work together to get things done, whether it’s taking on household chores or tackling a busy school year. But do you ever think about how your family can work together to stay healthy? From proper nutrition to safe exercise, Richard Grucz, MD, of Oakwood Healthcare System, will share important health tips and demonstrate how families can join together to maintain good health. Join us on October 7 from 7:00-8:00 PM for this informative event.

Dr. Grucz is a board certified family medicine physician at Oakwood Healthcare Center – Canton. He provides care for patients of all ages at the office, which is located at 7330 N. Canton Center Road.

Snail Mail for Seniors Card Making Extravaganza

Support Cathy Donaldson and her incredible organization Snail Mail for Seniors by creating cards for senior citizens. Cathy has been making and sending cards year round to over 750 senior citizens in assisted living and nursing homes since 2007. On Saturday September 14, from 2:00-4:00 PM she needs your help. Join her and her volunteers as they make cards celebrating Fall. We will provide the supplies, you bring your creativity!
