Wings are Back in Gear!

The Detroit Red Wings are back in town for a three game homestretch which includes the Ducks, Coyotes and Predators. After a good start to their season, the Wings hope to continue the trend. Chris Osgood remains three victories away from his 400th NHL career win. Tune in this season to see him capture it!

Detroit International Jazz Festival Celebrates its 31th Year!

America's Largest Free Jazz Festival comes to Detroit this Labor Day Weekend. Subtitled "Flamekeepers: Carrying the Torch of Modern Jazz" the DJF salutes the legacy of Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Betty Carter, Lester Bowie and Gil Evans. Sprawling over several city blocks in downtown Detroit, from Hart Plaza to Campus Martius, the festival offers fun for the whole family. From educational activities, storytelling, food and the launching of Jazz Planet.tv. The festival boasts five stages and 100 acts over the four day weekend which runs from Friday through Monday. August NASCAR Weekend at MIS

Michigan International Speedway's NASCAR season culminates this weekend with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series CARFAX 400. Enjoy a full weekend of events with family and friends beginning with Friday's Pole Day. Saturday brings the CARFAX 250 where Nationwide Series regulars battle the Sprint Series stars. Thunder Over Michigan

This weekend's Thunder Over Michigan Air Show at Willow Run in Ypsilanti will feature displays of historical and significant aircraft of the U.S. Military. Re-enactments of WWII battles, an F-16C Fighting Falcon Demonstration and a Gathering of Fortressess Legends are also scheduled. Step Up to the Plate 4 ALS

Want to go back in time? Then experience a vintage baseball game as the Early Risers Base Ball Club of Detroit and the Northville Eclipse Base Ball Club play in a fundraiser for ALS in Canton. Players will wear period reproduction uniforms and the game will be played using the rules and customs of the 19th century. ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease is one of the most common neuromuscular diseases worldwide, and people of all races and ethnic backgrounds are affected.

If you missed Canton's fireworks during the Heritage Festival, have no fear! Local fireworks are scheduled in DearbornPlymouth, and Westland. Other Michigan communities are also having fireworks if you happen to be traveling this Holiday Weekend. Team USA Heads to FIFA World Cup

The top 32 soccer teams from around the globe compete in the most competitive and most watched sporting event the world has ever known, the FIFA World Cup. South Africa hosts the World Cup and becomes the first African nation to do so. The Cup kicks off on June 11th and continues until July 11th. Team USA takes on Slovenia, the smallest country at the World Cup, on Friday June 18th. Check out some of the new World Cup Soccer materials here at the library.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican Meal!

Cinco de Mayo, which means the 5th of May in Spanish, commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. It is often confused as Mexico's Independence Day which is actually September 16th. Try one of the many recipes from the library's collection of Mexican Cookbooks and celebrate. ¡Salud! Sports Abound in Downtown Detroit!

Downtown Detroit is the place to be for the NCAA Men's Division I Hockey Frozen Four Championship and the Detroit Tigers' home opener! The action begins Thursday with the college hockey Semifinals and concludes with Saturday's Championship game at Ford Field. Tickets are still available at a reasonable price.
The Tigers are back at Comerica Park for a six game home-stretch beginning with Friday's home opener against the Cleveland Indians. Michigan native and comedian Tim Allen will throw one of the first ceremonial pitches along with servicemen representing each branch of the military. Game time 1:05pm. Go Get'Em Tigers!!

Go Spartans!

The Michigan State Spartans are one of the "Elite Eight" in the NCAA Men's College Basketball Championships. Watch the 2010 Midwest Regional Final between Michigan State and Tennessee on Sunday March 28th as the Spartans look to advance to their sixth Final Four in the last 12 years. Tip time set for 2:20 pm ET on CBS.
