The Detroit Red Wings are back in town for a three game homestretch which includes the Ducks, Coyotes and Predators. After a good start to their season, the Wings hope to continue the trend. Detroit International Jazz Festival Celebrates its 31th Year!
America's Largest Free Jazz Festival comes to Detroit this Labor Day Weekend. Subtitled "Flamekeepers: Carrying the Torch of Modern Jazz" the DJF salutes the legacy of Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Betty Carter, Lester Bowie and Gil Evans. Sprawling over several city blocks in downtown Detroit, from Hart Plaza to Campus Martius, the festival offers fun for the whole family. From educational activities, storytelling, food and the launching of Jazz Planet.tv. The festival boasts five stages and 100 acts over the four day weekend which runs from Friday through Monday. Step Up to the Plate 4 ALS
Want to go back in time? Then experience a vintage baseball game as the Early Risers Base Ball Club of Detroit and the Northville Eclipse Base Ball Club play in a fundraiser for ALS in Canton. Players will wear period reproduction uniforms and the game will be played using the rules and customs of the 19th century. ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease is one of the most common neuromuscular diseases worldwide, and people of all races and ethnic backgrounds are affected.

Team USA Heads to FIFA World Cup
The top 32 soccer teams from around the globe compete in the most competitive and most watched sporting event the world has ever known, the FIFA World Cup. South Africa hosts the World Cup and becomes the first African nation to do so. The Cup kicks off on June 11th and continues until July 11th. Team USA takes on Slovenia, the smallest country at the World Cup, on Friday June 18th. Check out some of the new World Cup Soccer materials here at the library.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican Meal!
Cinco de Mayo, which means the 5th of May in Spanish, commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. Sports Abound in Downtown Detroit!
Downtown Detroit is the place to be for the NCAA Men's Division I Hockey Frozen Four Championship and the Detroit Tigers' home opener! The action begins Thursday with the college hockey Semifinals and concludes with Saturday's Championship game at Ford Field. Tickets are still available at a reasonable price.The Tigers are back at Comerica Park for a six game home-stretch beginning with Friday's home opener against the Cleveland Indians. Michigan native and comedian Tim Allen will throw one of the first ceremonial pitches along with servicemen representing each branch of the military. Game time 1:05pm. Go Get'Em Tigers!!
