Spring Ahead

This weekend Eastern Standard Time ends and we spring ahead into Daylight Saving Time beginning Sunday March 11th at 2:00 AM. Move your clocks ahead one hour to gain that extra light during the early evening hours. In addition, take time to change those smoke detector batteries and check carbon monoxide detectors to protect your family and home.

Don Cornelius 1936-2012

Creator and host of the historic "Soul Train" TV show died February 3rd in Los Angeles. His groundbreaking show brought African-American music, fashion and dance to mainstream America for 35 years. Legendary artists such as Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and so many more were featured. "Soul Train" was to soul music what "American Bandstand" was to rock'n'roll. Go Red Friday

Heart disease is the leading killer in the United States, which is why February is American Heart Month. Since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim it as such. The object is to increase public knowledge of various cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, and the prevention of heart disease by encouraging heart-healthy habits. This Friday, February 3rd, is the American Heart Association movement National Wear Red Day, which is dedicated to building an awareness of risk and raising funds for research and education specifically for women.

Joe Paterno 1926-2012

Joe Paterno, the legendary Penn State coach, died January 20 in State College, Pennsylvania of lung cancer. The winningest coach in major college football, "JoePa" roamed the Penn State sidelines for 46 seasons, his thick-rimmed glasses, windbreaker and jet-black sneakers as familiar as the Nittany Lions’ blue and white helmets.

Red Wing All-Stars

Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard will play for Team Chara in the NHL All-Star Game hosted by the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, January 29th. The Red Wings head into the All-Star break with NHL's longest home game winning streak in 36 years with 17! Tax Help for Seniors

Appointments are now being scheduled at the Summit for Seniors needing tax assistance. Counselors sponsored by AARP will help prepare tax returns beginning January 31st from the hours of 9:00 AM-1:30 PM. To schedule an appointment call the Canton Senior Desk at 734-394-5485.

College Football Bowl Frenzy and More

College Bowl Madness begins Saturday, December 17th with the New Mexico Bowl continuing into 2012 culimnating with the BCS Championship Bowl on January 9th. Western Michigan, Michigan State and Michigan will see action in the Little Caesars Bowl, Outback Bowl and Sugar Bowl, respectively. In addition, the Wayne State Warriors will play for the NCAA Division II Championship on Saturday December 17th.

Before Gobbling Get Trotting

Join the fun and begin a tradition this Thanksgiving Day in Detroit's 29th Annual Turkey Trot before the Parade. Dress-up and enter the Costume Contest, participate in the 10K Fifth Turkey Trot, 5K Stuffing Strut or the Mashed Potato Mile. Honoring U.S. Veterans This Veteran's Day

To commemorate Veteran's Day, Friday, November 11th, the library will be providing bookmarks featuring library resources appealing to veterans. The bookmarks will be available at the library and at the Canton Applebee's, who invite U.S. active military personnel and veterans to a free meal thanking them for their service to our country.

Prescription Take Back Day, October 29th

Is your medicine cabinet filled with expired or unused drugs and are wondering what to do with them? Safely dispose of them on Saturday October 29th from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Canton Township Police Department. Help keep the water supply clean and at the same time stop dangerous medications from being accidentally consumed or stolen. The free event  is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and this week's Red Ribbon activities.

Hockey fans, the Detroit Red Wings open the 2011-2012 NHL Hockey season at Joe Louis on Friday October 7th against the Ottawa Senators. Puck drops at 7:30 PM. Grab your spirit wear and cheer them on to what is sure to be another exciting hockey season.

A Day at the Orchard is Fun for the Whole Family

Area apple orchards and cider mills have opened for the season offering cider, doughnuts, apples, u-pick apples, pumpkins, hay rides and much more. Plan an outing and stock up on the seasonal goodies while they last. Go for a wagon ride at the nearby Plymouth Orchards and Cider Mill on Warren Road between Napier and Gotfredson Roads.

Canton residents can rid their house of waste considered toxic, flammable or corrosive this Saturday, September 10th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the DPW located at 4847 Sheldon Rd. Make your home a safe environment and properly dispose of waste material such as computers, scanners, household batteries, oil-based and latex paint, flourescent light bulbs, bug spray, expired medication and much more.
