Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey Kids!
LB's at it again! While it was snowy and freezing here in Michigan, LB went to sunny, warm Key West, Florida with Miss Marianne! LB must stand for Lucky Bear! There are lots of fun things to see in Key West — Lighthouses, Libraries, Post Offices, Fish, Butterflies and Cats! And you can eat lots of Key Lime Pie! One of the neatest things LB and Marianne did is they went to the most southern point of the whole United States and got their picture taken. You can almost see Cuba from there! Key West is also where Ernest Hemingway lived. Ernest Hemingway is an author who wrote books for grown ups. Some of his books take place in Michigan, because he lived here for awhile too. Then he moved to Key West and ate lots of pie and owned lots of cats. Make sure you check out all the pictures from LB's trip on Flickr! It sure sounds like he had fun! Until next time…

Barbara McClintock

If you enjoy fairy tales, you may have read some of Barbara McClintock's books. This Author and Illustrator has created fabulous editions of many of our favorite tales such as The Mitten, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and the Gingerbread Man. But did you know she got her start by seeking advice from Maurice Sendak? Or that her first books were stories about Jim Henson's Fraggles? Discover more about Mrs. McClintock (and admire her beautiful artwork) by checking out her website. Then look for some of her books here at the library.

Hey Kids!
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! I sure did! Thanksgiving is a time that you get to spend with your family and that's what I did! Some of you had to travel to visit family, and did too, because my family lives in the the Detroit Zoo! I'm sure you've seen my cousins. They're the polar bears, the grizzly bears and the black bears! I took lots of pictures, and you can see them now on Canton Public Library's Flickr account. We had a great time visiting, and boy, did I learn a lot about my family history! For example, my closest cousins are the Grizzly Bears. My next closest cousins, the Brown bears are a little bit smaller. My third cousins, the Polar Bears, live way up north in Canada (eh?). All of them like to swim and eat fish. I only like to eat Swedish Fish. And they all hibernate. So if you see me sleeping in the library this winter, don't wake me up! I'm hibernating!
Lots of grownups come to the library to do research on their family history. After I got back home, I decided I'd do some research on mine too! Turns out, you don't have to look too far to find out about my family! There are lots of books here in the Children's Department about us. I recommend checking one out. My family history is very riveting.
What's your family like? Is it big? Do you have lots of Cousins like me? Do they live far away? Are they funny? Sometimes our friends even feel like family. I'm pretty thankful for mine. I hope you are thankful for your family too! Until next time!

Hey Kids!
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you all had a great day with your family yesterday. I went and visited my family recently (but that's a story for another time). Guess what? I'm taking a road trip next week! I'm sure you've heard about Canton Public Library's Barnes and Noble Book Fair, right? Did you know that Miss Kristen will be there to do storytimes at 11:00AM and 7:00PM? Bet you didn't know that I'm going to be there too! Come see me! And if while you're visiting, you decide you want to buy me a Christmas present, I'll have my Wish List there for you to get ideas. Can't wait to see you on Monday!

Looking for Accelerated Reader?

You're at the library. Looking for a book to read for school. The books you planned to get are all checked out. After looking for what seems like forever, you finally find something that's caught your eye. But then the fear strikes. What if there isn't an Accelerated Reading Quiz for this? Never Fear! In the Children's Reference section, we have a few Accelerated Reader lists from local schools. If we don't have your particular school, you can look up books on AR BookFinder. You can type in titles of books and find out if an AR quiz exists. This won't tell you if your school owns the particular quiz, but you'll be able to rest easy and enjoy your book!

Rapunzel hits the big screen

Disney's new animated movie, Tangled, is releasing next week for Thanksgiving. It happens to be based on one of my favorite fairy tales, Rapunzel. If your kids aren't familiar with the tale, now would be the time to check it out! For a more off-beat introduction, try Falling For Rapunzel. It's a loose adaption of the story, but the pictures, the rhyme and the humor appeal to all ages. For older readers there's Rapunzel's Revenge, a graphic novel authored by Shannon Hale, who also wrote Princess Academy. This retelling sets the tale in the Wild West, and spunky Rapunzel's hair makes a great lasso.

Hey Kids!
Don't panic! If you come to the library this weekend, you probably won't see me. I'm not sick or hurt, and I didn't get grounded. I'm on vacation! I'm off to visit some friends, and I have to pick up LB from his latest trip. But I'll be back on Tuesday. I hope you kiddos who are coming to the library on Monday for storytime have a wonderful time. Hey did you know that Monday starts National Young Reader's Week! Storytime is a great way to celebrate.
Well, I just didn't want you all to worry. See you soon!
Until then,

Hey Kids!
You may have noticed that there's been lots of talk in the library lately about CPL's 30th anniversary.  There are only a very few people who've been a part of Canton Public Library as long as I have, so I thought I'd chime in with my own experiences here at CPL. You can find my story on the library's Flickr account.  Yup!  I'm a pretty tech savvy bear. In some of the pictures I look kind of funny because they were taken a long time ago.  You'd better not laugh!

Second Grade Book Discussion

Get together with other second graders and talk about a great book! This month we'll be discussing Nate The Great. Register online, and then check out the book at the Children’s Desk. Discussion Group meets on Tuesday, October 19th at 5:00PM. Registration begins Tuesday, October 5th.

Got Goosebumps?

Looking for something creepy, ghostly, or haunted to get you in the Halloween mood? While Goosebumps are the usual go to movies for kids looking for a movie of this variety, we have lots of other options here at CPL
  • Grizzly Tales: These are compilations of many short stories cartoons with a slightly creepy bent
  • Ruby Gloom: This new series stars a cheerful girl and her rather gloomy friends
  • Cartoon Network Halloween specials: With so many cartoons to choose from, there's definitely going to be something that appeals to everyone
  • Halloweentown: The premise of this Disney Channel series of movies is that Halloween creatures exist in a alternative universe. The fourth installment stars Lucas Grabeel, in his pre-High School Musical Days.
There are lots more spooky films to check out! Just look up Halloween Juvenile films in our catalog!

Hey kids!

Well, LB is at it again. This past weekend he went to a wedding with Miss Ruth in New York. On the way home they stopped at Niagara Falls. This means that LB has been to Niagara TWICE and New York TWICE this year! Wow! What a lucky bear! But since there are always new things to try, he had some new adventures. Miss Ruth introduced LB to Yogen Fruz, which is really yummy frozen yogurt. It's hard to explain really, so he took lots of pictures. Basically you get to pick the flavors of your frozen yogurt from the fresh fruit provided, and then they blend it all up! The result is cold, fruity, pink wonderfulness! Sadly, there isn't any Yogen Fruz in Michigan, so I doubt I will get any soon. But it is located in other cool places! Maybe someone will take LB to California or Iowa or Minnesota or Hawaii or Bulgaria so he can get some more. Wow! Yogen Fruz is in a lot of places!

I can't wait to see where LB ends up next! Until then...

Happy Birthday Bilbo and Frodo Baggins

Wednesday, September 22nd is the birthday of Frodo Baggins and his uncle Bilbo Baggins, but in different years. Frodo's quest chronicled in The Lord of the Rings also begins on this date, when Bilbo leaves him a mysterious ring. Many of us are familiar with the three movie epic that was released a few years back, but fewer are familiar with the cartoon version completed by Rankin Bass back in 1980. This version is much less scary and much shorter too! With singing orcs (I kid you not!), this is a great introduction for younger kids to Tolkien's tales. Why not celebrate Hobbit Day with a Hobbit party?
