Always Winter?

Has this last snowstorm got you thinking that it's always winter? Children ages 8 to 11 are invited to join us on Thursday, February 24th at 7:00PM. We'll enjoy games and activities based on C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. Hopefully, Aslan will shake his mane, and we will have Spring again.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey kids! And Sleepy Bear!
Well, the book discussion is a go! Make sure you come to the library on Wednesday, February 23rd at 2:00PM to talk books with me and Sleepy Bear. It's going to be so fun!
Thanks, Sleepy Bear, for the reminder that you live in a different time zone than we do. I forget that sometimes! We get sunlight and new days before you do, but you get the weather first. Funny how that works. It has been so warm in Michigan the last couple days that we do not have any snow left. But from your blog it sounds like we will be getting some soon!
There are so many kids to watch in the library, that I don't usually get time to read until everyone goes home. But when I do get time to read, I like to to the fish in our fish tank. I don't know if they listen though. What do you like to read? I like books about bears. One of my favorites is Big Smelly Bear by Britta Teckentrup. Have you read it? I hope it's not about me! I'm big but I hope I'm not smelly!
Talk to you Wednesday for our book discussion!

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey Kids!
Sleepy Bear wrote back! Woo Hoo!
Sleepy Bear — We have had lots of snow here, but it's been kinda warm lately and it's melting. I even saw a robin this week! But I don't think it will be spring here yet. After all, we still have to have Winter Break! What's the weather like by your house?
And speaking of Winter Break, you said you wanted to read a book with us, and guess what? I'm having my very first Book Discussion here at the library that week. Miss Ruth is going to help me here at the library. Now, I don't have much experience hosting a book club, and, I don't talk, so I was hoping you would be a part of my book discussion too! We're going to read Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend. I think this would be the perfect book for two bears who a new friends to read. Can't wait to hear what you think!
Well kids, you've heard it from me! If you come to my book discussion during Winter Break, you might just get two bears for the price of one! Oh boy. Am I excited. Can't wait to see you there!

Did you know…

The UK's National Literacy Trust has confirmed what we already know, that youngsters who use the library are likely to be better readers. Canton Public Library has lots of resources that make reading fun. Book and Puppet kits allow kids to act out a story after it's been read to them. Book and CD kits lets kids follow along with a reader and are great for long car trips. And don't forget to check out our Kids Booklist page, which has lots of suggestions on topics of interest for all ages. Happy Reading!

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey Kids!
Thorndyke here. I found out there's another Blogging Bear, named Sleepy Bear way across the country in the Seattle, Washington area. You can see his blog right here! Now, I haven't met many other bears that blog, so I'm curious and want to be friends. Washington state is really far away. Do you know anything about it? Maybe Sleepy Bear will tell us all about it.
Maybe we can be Cyber Pen Pals! Do you know what pen pals are? Back before there was the internet or email people used to write letters, put stamps on them and put them in the mail to send to people! And then the other person would write back! It took a lot longer than email, but was sure a lot of fun!
So Sleepy Bear, if you're reading this, write back and let's be friends!
What do you think, kids? Will we hear from Sleepy Bear? I sure hope so! Until next time,
Bear Hugs!

Some one very special had a birthday this past Sunday, January 16th! Thorndyke, Canton Public Library's very own resident bruin celebrated his special day pretty much the same way he spends every day, hanging around at the library. What's a great way to commemorate his special day? By Checking out a bear friendly movie here from Canton Public Library! Here are a few Thorndyke approved suggestions…

Children's Books for your iPad

We often talk about all the fancy and exciting apps grownups can download for their iPads. But did you know there are apps for the young (or young at heart) in your life as well?! Kirkus Reviews just started an online iPad app review page and is highlighting 5 children's books apps they recommend. The five range from very simple to very complex. The Green Eggs and Ham app encourages an emergent reader to read along. The Alice in Wonderland app lives up the mayhem of Lewis Carroll's original book. My favorite is the pop up Peter Rabbit Storybook. This app plays like a typical lift-the-flap toy book you'd find at any bookstore, but in a digital format. Take a look! And Happy Digital Reading!

Hey Kids!
LB's at it again! While it was snowy and freezing here in Michigan, LB went to sunny, warm Key West, Florida with Miss Marianne! LB must stand for Lucky Bear! There are lots of fun things to see in Key West — Lighthouses, Libraries, Post Offices, Fish, Butterflies and Cats! And you can eat lots of Key Lime Pie! One of the neatest things LB and Marianne did is they went to the most southern point of the whole United States and got their picture taken. You can almost see Cuba from there! Key West is also where Ernest Hemingway lived. Ernest Hemingway is an author who wrote books for grown ups. Some of his books take place in Michigan, because he lived here for awhile too. Then he moved to Key West and ate lots of pie and owned lots of cats. Make sure you check out all the pictures from LB's trip on Flickr! It sure sounds like he had fun! Until next time…

Barbara McClintock

If you enjoy fairy tales, you may have read some of Barbara McClintock's books. This Author and Illustrator has created fabulous editions of many of our favorite tales such as The Mitten, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and the Gingerbread Man. But did you know she got her start by seeking advice from Maurice Sendak? Or that her first books were stories about Jim Henson's Fraggles? Discover more about Mrs. McClintock (and admire her beautiful artwork) by checking out her website. Then look for some of her books here at the library.

Hey Kids!
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! I sure did! Thanksgiving is a time that you get to spend with your family and that's what I did! Some of you had to travel to visit family, and did too, because my family lives in the the Detroit Zoo! I'm sure you've seen my cousins. They're the polar bears, the grizzly bears and the black bears! I took lots of pictures, and you can see them now on Canton Public Library's Flickr account. We had a great time visiting, and boy, did I learn a lot about my family history! For example, my closest cousins are the Grizzly Bears. My next closest cousins, the Brown bears are a little bit smaller. My third cousins, the Polar Bears, live way up north in Canada (eh?). All of them like to swim and eat fish. I only like to eat Swedish Fish. And they all hibernate. So if you see me sleeping in the library this winter, don't wake me up! I'm hibernating!
Lots of grownups come to the library to do research on their family history. After I got back home, I decided I'd do some research on mine too! Turns out, you don't have to look too far to find out about my family! There are lots of books here in the Children's Department about us. I recommend checking one out. My family history is very riveting.
What's your family like? Is it big? Do you have lots of Cousins like me? Do they live far away? Are they funny? Sometimes our friends even feel like family. I'm pretty thankful for mine. I hope you are thankful for your family too! Until next time!

Hey Kids!
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you all had a great day with your family yesterday. I went and visited my family recently (but that's a story for another time). Guess what? I'm taking a road trip next week! I'm sure you've heard about Canton Public Library's Barnes and Noble Book Fair, right? Did you know that Miss Kristen will be there to do storytimes at 11:00AM and 7:00PM? Bet you didn't know that I'm going to be there too! Come see me! And if while you're visiting, you decide you want to buy me a Christmas present, I'll have my Wish List there for you to get ideas. Can't wait to see you on Monday!
