Your Dream Library LEGO contest winners

Congratulations to Kylie Morton, who won the Popular Vote in our Dream Library Contest with her "Above the Surface" Library. Kylie won two tickets to the LEGO KidFest happening at the Novi Showplace October 12th-14th. Congratulations to all the winners and participants on your amazing and wonderful LEGO creations.

Last Day to Nominate

This is the last day you can nominate the Canton Public Library in LEGO Duplo and ALSC's Read! Play! Build! program.  It only takes a minute, and you help us win LEGOs for our early literacy area. You can nominate once a day through October 1, 2012.  Thank you for your support of Canton Public Library.  

Where's Waldo Scavenger Hunt

The perennially popular children's book Where's Waldo celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Kids have spent hours looking for the bespeckled explorer in his candy cane striped sweater and his friends. Now they can hunt for Waldo here at the Children's Library on Thursday, October 11th starting at 7:00 PM. This program is recommended for ages 7 to 10. No registration required.

The Hobbit Celebrates 75 years

The hobbit, or, There and back again by J.R.R. Tolkien — J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit turns 75 years old on September 21.  September 22 is also Hobbit Day, honoring the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo (whose long awaited birthday celebration initiatied events in the Fellowship of the Ring).  With the first film  in a trilogy  based on The Hobbit releasing this December, it's a great time to check it out for a reread!

Magic School Bus now on DVD

Here's some great news.  The entire Magic School Bus TV series has finally been rereleased on DVD.  We've made it easier to find by shelving it in the JDVD section.  Each disc has multiple episodes on it. With eight discs in the series there are lots of adventures to be had with Ms. Frizzle and her class.

Happy Birthday to You

Hey kids, did you know Canton Public Library celebrates birthdays? During your birthday month you can fill out a special paper shape for your birthday that is displayed here on the Birthday Wall in the Children's Library. And you'll get a small token as a birthday gift from the library too. Happy Birthday!

Family LEGO day

Join us Saturday, September 29th at 2:00 PM in the Community Room to build the CPL Story Land. To coincide with the Your Dream Library Contest, we will be building vehicles, settings, and other items from your favorite stories. Build the Shrieking Shack, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, or James' Giant Peach. Later, we'll catalogue your entries for future inspiration.

Don't forget to nominate Canton Public Library for the LEGO DUPLO Read! Build! Play! Project.

While this program does not require registration, it does involve complex assembly and small pieces, and as such is intended for kids in third grade and up only.

Your Dream Library LEGO contest

Kids in 1st through 6th grade are invited to take part in CPL's very first LEGO contest. Participants will build their dream library out of LEGO and have it displayed in the Children's Library during the month of September. Please read all contest rules and register beforehand. There will be one winner for each age division, 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, as well as one popular-vote winner decided by library patrons. Winners will be announced at the Family LEGO day on Saturday, September 29th.

British Children's Author Nina Bawden passed away Wednesday, August 22. She is best know for her novel Carrie's War.

Be Creative With Some Virtual Sand Art

Thisissand.com is a fun website that turns your computer screen into a sand box. You're taken to what is initially a blank screen with a tiny gray box in the left hand corner. Hold down the mouse to see what happens. Then click on the little gray box for more directions. You can use this website to make incredible designs like the one on the right. Let your creative juices flow and have fun! Don't forget to check out the gallery to see others amazing artwork.

Help the Library Win LEGOs

Love your library? Here's a way to show it. LEGO Duplo and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) have joined together to support local libraries. Please go to the Read! Play! Build! project and nominate Canton Public Library. The most nominated library receives $5,000 for books and supplies. The top 200 libraries recieve a special LEGO Duplo toolkit that would be used in our early literacy area. You can nominate once per day, so vote often! Nominations close October 1st, 2012.

Author Margaret Mahy Passes Away

Acclaimed children's author Margaret Mahy passed away Monday. July 23, in Christchurch in her native New Zealand.  She is a recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Carnegie Medal (Britain's equivalent to our Newberry).  She authored more than 150 books, some of which you can find at Canton Public Library.

Geek Out Over Comic-Con

Comic-Con 2012 is underway this weekend in San Diego, California. Your favorite books, movies, and TV shows are all present at this pop culture extravaganza. Get into the spirit by catching up on your favorites.

The hobbit, or, there and back again by J.R.R. Tolkien — Peter Jackson adds to his Tolkien trilogy with two movies based on this book. You can also find it in adult fiction.

Embrace the Geek

Embrace Your GeekFriday, July 13th is Embrace Your Geekness day.  It's a great day to proudly proclaim you are a geek. Remember, the definition of a geek can be "a person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest."  Everyone has a little bit of geek in them.  What are you totally interested in?  Is it comic books?  Technology? Sports?  A particular TV show?  Show your Geekness by visiting the library dressed like a geek and get entered into a special drawing.

Make Your Own Ice Cream

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream month? Celebrate here at the library on Monday July 23 by making your own ice cream. Kids going into grades 1st through 4th and their caregivers are welcome join us. Please register for one time slot, beginning Tuesday, June 26th. Rain location will be in the Community Room.
