Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey Kids!
I need your help with something. See, my third favorite holiday (after Christmas and the First Day of Summer Reading) is coming up soon. It’s Halloween! But I can’t decide what to be. I have to decide soon, because I get to wear my costume for the whole month of October!! This is where you come in. You’ll see that I’ve posted a poll below on the web site. You can either vote for what you think I should be for Halloween there, or you can come into the Children’s Library and vote! Sorry, there’s no prize. The library pays me in cookies--that’s how I keep my nice round physique! But you’ll definitely see what costume was the favorite, 'cause that’s what I’ll be wearing come October! Of course, in order to make my costume in time, I’ll need all your votes by Monday, September 28th. Gotta have time to make that costume you know! Thanks soooo much for your help!

Hey Kids!
There's a wonderful reason to celebrate this week. No, not just because it's Labor Day. The first week of September is National Waffle Week! I like to eat mine with honey. A friend of mine eats her's with peanut butter, chocolate chips and whipped cream. Some people like to top theirs with fruit. How do you like your waffles? Try some adventurous eating this week by having breakfast for dinner. Check out one of our Breakfast Cookbooks for ideas. Or read the book Everything on a Waffle as a family. And don't forget about waffle cones and waffle fries! There are plenty of ways to celebrate all week! Mmmmm, I'm hungry!

Actors' Birthdays

Macaulay Culkin and Keke Palmer share a birthday today, August 26th. Both have starred in numerous kid's movies. Macaulay as Kevin McCallister in the first two Home Alone movies, a role created with him in mind. Keke has starred as a National Spelling Bee contestant in Akeelah and the Bee, and currently stars in the popular Nickelodean series True Jackson VP, coming soon to CPL.

Happy Birthday Christopher Robin!

Christopher Robin Milne, son of A. A. Milne was born today, August 21st, in 1920. He and his teddy bear were the inspiration for everyone's favorite boy and bear duo, Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh. Why not celebrate with a Winnie-the-Pooh movie or book?
Need More Winnie? Try A Bear Called Winnie, which tells the story of the real life bear that Christopher's teddy was named after. You can also find more information about the Milnes and Winnie here.

Hey Kids! Wowzers! I am SO proud of you! Did you know that an incredible 4,798 kids and teens signed up for Summer Reading 2009?!?! And that 2,384 kids and teens finished summer reading and got books from the Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by the Friends of the Library? Thanks Friends! The Adult Librarians told me that over 1000 grown-ups signed up for summer reading and lots of them earned books too. I think you all deserve a pat on the back. Go you!

Some Pig!

You may have noticed our book display over the Children's CDs. Who knew there were so many great pig characters in Children's Literature?! Some of these characters have even made it to film, like Wilbur from Charlotte's Web, Babe the Gallant Pig, and, coming soon, Olivia! Don't forget those other "hams" on film, like Miss Piggy from the Muppet Show and Piggley from Jakers.

Hey Kids! It's hard to believe it's almost August already. This summer is really flying by! I'm having so much fun seeing all my friends at the library. I'll be really sad when you all go back to school. I wanted to tell you about my new friend. He's in the fish tank and really small. He's a baby snail! Right now he is mostly wiggly, squiggily and shell-less, but if you keep watching, he will grow his own new shell! He's pretty cool. Even though it doesn't look like they do much, snails are very interesting animals. If you're curious to find out more, there are lots of books about Snails here at the library! While you're at the fish tank, don't forget to wave to Nemo also. I don't want him to get jealous of Baby Snail's attention! Until next time,

Caution! Big Trucks (and other vehicles) ahead!

While their parents may cringe at the sight of the orange and white striped construction barrels, little tykes get excited knowing this is their chance to see their favorite big trucks up close.  For a chance to see the big rigs up close without the hassle of stop and go traffic, head to bookshelf 13 in the Children's Library.  There in the J620's you'll find trucks of all kinds, a

Mosquito Free Summer Camp

Mr. Troop Mom recently premiered on Nickelodeon, and now you can check it out here at the library! George Lopez is a widower who volunteers to chaperone his daughter's scout troop's camping trip. Hillarity inevitability ensues. Of course, this is not the first film that is set at camp. The Jonas Brothers went to Camp Rock last summer. Way back in 1969, Charlie Brown visits camp in It Was A Short Summer, Charlie Brown.

Hey Kids! I have to tell you how much I've loved seeing all my friends come to the library over the last couple of weeks. Did you know that over 3000 of you have registered for Summer Reading? Wow! 1500 of you registered on the very first day! Double Wow! And then lots of you--I think we counted over 700 of you--came back this week to see Joel Tacey, make a craft, or watch a movie! Thanks for making our summer so busy, 'cause the librarians and I love seeing you have fun! Keep Reading! And don't forget to stop and say hello!

Based on the Book

Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Inkheart, Spiderwick Chronicles.  Most people know that these recent movies are based on books.  But Children's novels have been providing sources for movies for many years.

Your Favorite Songs on Film

Do you like "The Goldfish Song" by Laurie Berkner? Maybe Dan Zanes more your style. Or do you really like to sing along with Raffi? Or the Imagination Movers, or the Biscuit Brothers? We have music videos and filmed concerts of your favorite children's singers right here at CPL. Check them out while your signing up for summer reading.

Bonjour petits enfants! Zis iz Thorndyke zee Arteest Bear! I am Getting Creative @ My Library. Can you tell I am excited for Summer Reading? Signs of summer reading are popping up all over CPL. The Summer Reading bulletin board is up, the reading logs have been printed, the prizes are hidden in a secure location in the library, and I am wearing my summer reading t-shirt. For a bear who lives in the library, the first day of Summer Reading is almost better than Christmas. Will I see YOU here on Monday? I hope so! Until then,
