New Green Videos for Kids

Even children's television is getting their green on.   Familiar characters like Handy Manny,  Elmo, and the Schoolhouse Rock gang are helping kids learn to be environmentally conscious.  Check one out today!

Tweens 3-D Movie Night!

Tweens in grades 5 and 6 can join us for the 3-D movie Journey to the Center of the Earth on the big screen in the Community Room on Thursday, April 16, at 6:30 pm. We'll have nifty 3-d glasses for everyone.  Online registration is open.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame...

The Tigers Home Opener is this coming Friday, April 10th.  Even if you don't have tickets to the big game, you can get into the baseball spirit with a hotdog, popcorn, and a family-friendly baseball movie from CPL.  Some of my favorites are The Sandlot, Angels in the Outfield, and Rookie of the Year.  Batter Up!

It's Time For Tea!

Children age 4-6 and caregivers are welcomed for a hare-raising fun tea party with Peter Rabbit and his friends.   We’ll hear the Story of Peter Rabbit, make a craft and have a snack.  Online registration begins April 1.

Going to the Dogs

Bolt, Beverly Hills ChihuahuaHotel for Dogs.  There have been a lot of family films released with dogs in them lately.  But they've always been a surefire Hollywood hit all the way back to the days of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.

Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Friday was an important day!  Not only was it  the first day of Spring, it was also National Sweater Day, in honor of what would have been Mister Rogers' 81st birthday.  If you missed it, there is still time to celebrate! Canton Public Library has several episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.   Wear your favorite cardigan sweater, put on your tennis shoes and watch one wit

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hi Kids!  Thorndyke here!  Did you know that today—March 19th –is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day?   And since all the kids who come to the Canton Public Library are absolutely incredible, it’s a very important day to celebrate.   My favorite way?  With a song!  Maybe "Skinnamarink" by Sharon, Lois, and Bram. Another great way is with ice cream!  May I suggest the flavor Bear Claw?  It’s my favorite!   Have a great week, kids!

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

"I think so, Brain, but if they called them 'sad meals' no one would buy them." If this quote brings a smile to your face, chances are you grew up watching Pinky and the Brain.

Hey kids! Guess What? Today it is only 100 days until Summer Reading! Aren’t you excited? This year the theme is Get Creative @ Your Library—but I can’t tell you any more because that would spoil all the surprises we have planned! All I can tell you is that it will be FUN! And guess what? Today also means it’s only 100 days until summer vacation. Good times. So if it gets cold later next week, just repeat this to yourself “Summer Reading’s Coming! Summer Reading’s Coming!” and the day will be a whole lot sunnier.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Boy!  I can’t wait for March to get here.  Why?  Because March is Reading Month!  And Reading Month means First Grade Round Up!    This is the 18th year the  Children’s Tween and Teen Services Librarians will host first grade classes from local schools.  And I haven’t missed one yet!    Kids get a tour of the library and meet my Giraffe friends Caribou and Rafiki.  Then they make a craft and see a really funny puppet show.  The best part of First Grade Round Up is that each First Grader gets a library card and checks out a book that day

Betcha didn’t know…

That Lucas Grabeel (Ryan of HSM fame) starred in a little known 2008 film called The Adventures of Food Boy.  He plays Ezra, who learns (at a rather inopportune time) that he has the power to make food appear in his hands.  Like every super hero, Ezra struggles to decide whether he will use his powers to benefit himse

In honor of Valentine’s Day (by the way, have you seen my nifty Cupid costume yet?) I thought I’d share this conversation I overheard in the Children’s DVD section.

Boy 1 (picks up Free Willy 3):  Let’s get this one.
Boy 2:  No! Not that one.  They kiss!
Boy 1 (shocked): They kiss the whale?
Boy 2: No!  The boy kisses the girl!
Boy 1: Ew! Gross!  Let’s get something else.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey kids! Thorndyke here. After watching the library happenings for over 15 years, I’m glad they’ve finally given me a voice. ‘Cause nobody knows more about this library than me, except for maybe Miss Kristen and Mrs. Havenstein-Coughlin, but they go home at night. I tell you, I have the best life—sitting by the birthday wall, watching the kids come for storytime and summer reading. And the librarians are some of my best friends! They have a pretty fun job. So next time you’re at the library, stop by and wave hello. I’ll be looking for you!
