Library Board Approves Tax Rate Reduction
CANTON, MI—The Canton Public Library Board of Trustees approved the reduction of the library millage rate at their September 18 meeting. Canton Township homeowners will pay the new rate of 1.4980 mils for library taxes in calendar year 2009.
The rate drop will reduce the library’s operating budget by 10.6% compared to 2008. Library staff closely examined budgets to look for savings opportunities as across-the- board cuts were made. The library’s 2009 budget is 5.8 million dollars.
“In today’s economic climate, governments need to find ways to reduce the tax burden on residents,” says James Fausone, library trustee. “The library can lead the way locally by finding ways to cut costs and give taxpayers some relief.”
Library Director Eva Davis says patrons will not notice a difference in service or programs. “Everyone at the library remains committed to excellence in service, programs and value for our patrons. We will continue the storytimes, computer classes and other popular programs like summer reading.”
The Canton Public Library has seen increased usage over the past year with a 5% increase in circulation. Currently, over 65,400 Canton residents hold library cards.
