MeLCat Scheduled Downtime

The Michican eLibrary Catalog (MelCat) will be down beginning at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, Sept. 14 for a software upgrade. It is expected to be down the rest of the day. Patrons will still be able to check out and return MeL loans. However, requests for renewals may receive the message "server unavailable." Patrons and library staff will not be able to search or place new interloan requests using MeLCat. Databases may also be affected. Patrons may not be able to do a remote login (via an account at a MeLCat library).

Single stream recycling

Canton has single stream recycling, which means all recycle items are placed together into a single bin at curbside for pick-up. But what happens after the items get to the recycle center? Michigan Radio has a video tour of Ann Arbor's new recycling facility.

Toad-ling up the numbers

Each year the Friends of the Rouge conduct a volunteer watershed Frog and Toad Survey. On Wednesday, March 3 from 7:00-9:00PM a training session will be held at The Summit in Canton. Volunteers will be trained to distinguish what type of frog or toad is making the various calls heard in local wetlands. The session is open to all ages (children welcome when accompanied by a participating adult). The session is free, but pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call the Friends of the Rouge at (313) 792-9621 or email monitoring@therouge.org. To help you get a "jump" on the training, the Canton Library has many books on frogs and toads, such as A field guide to reptiles & amphibians: eastern and central North America.

That's No Leopard, That's My Operating System

Whether you need to learn more about your computer's current operating system or if you are interested in learning about a different one, the library carries a wide variety of books to help you. Materials cover older systems like Windows 98, as well as newer ones like Vista and Snow Leopard. Also covered are open source systems such as Linux.

They could do it!

When the United States entered World War II, American men went into the military and American women filled their places in the offices and factories. "We can do it" was the slogan and Rosie the Riveter was the symbol of these working women. The American Rosie the Riveter Association has gathered together the stories of the "Rosies" and, thanks to a donation by a Rosie, the Canton Library has the set of these books.

Cats have staff

A single man with a single cat, the simply drawn animated adventures of Simon & his cat became a hit on YouTube. Cat owners everywhere related to Simon as he found his life run by a cat. Now the cat has come to the printed page in "Simon's Cat". The same simple drawings relate humorous little snippets of Life with a Cat. From feeding the cat to litterbox mishaps, a cat owner is sure to see some familiar situations. Check it out and share a laugh with your favorite feline.

Where will you be when the lights go out?
