Economy Spurs Home Garden Boom

The Associated Press reported in "Dollars from Dirt: Economy Spurs Home Garden Boom" that people are gardening to save money. I love the thought that backyard gardening can not only make people and the environment healthier, but can perhaps help solve the economic crisis. CPL's "Yard Scraps to Garden Treasures" program on April 22 from 7:00-8:30pm can get you off to a great start by showing you how to compost and enrich your soil.

The Power of Solar

In your efforts to go green do not forget about the power of solar. Some companies, like Ikea, are developing solar power products like Ikea's new solar lighting line. To find out ways you can use solar energy in your life check out Real Goods Solar Living Sourcebook: Your Complete Guide to Renewable Energy Technologies and Sustainable Living by John Schaeffer.

Global Warming Severity Underestimated

DroughtIn a recent article in The Guardian, scientists warn that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) substantially underestimated the severity of global warming over the rest of the century in their most recent report on climate change. In reponse, former US vice-president Al Gore called for a globally coordinated stimulus to tackle climate change.

Think Green When Planning Your Next Vacation

Although ski resorts have been proven to have a negative impact on the environment, many resorts are making efforts to become more sustainable. Treehugger.com has come up with a list of the Top 7 Greenest Ski Destinations in the U.S. For those looking for warmer, or simply different eco-friendly destinations, check out the resources CPL has on ecotourism. Gardening Beneficial to Older Adults
