I just read
Sleeping Naked is Green by Vanessa Farquharson — one woman's attempt to incorporate one new green activity a day into her life for one year. If you are trying to lead a greener life, but sick of feeling guilty about that one cup of coffee you had in a Styrofoam cup last week, this might be the book for you. It is told with a sense of humor and interesting Canadian view-point, but yet has some good ideas as to how to lead a greener life. In celebration of CPL's thirtieth anniversary, here are thirty of the more entertaining (and sometimes downright gross) ideas that Vanessa attempted to incorporate into her life during her one year adventure:
- Forgo electronic gym equipment
- Switch to recycled toilet paper
- Use handkerchiefs instead of tissues
- Switch to vegan-friendly dental floss
- Invest in permanent laser hair removal rather than shaving and waxing
- Pick up litter when you see it
- Switch to recycled, recyclable razors
- If it's yellow, let it mellow
- Sleep naked
- Let hair air dry
- Use goodsearch.com or ripple.org for Internet searches
- Shower in the dark
- Cut hair short
- Eat food from the pot or pan cooked in
- Enforce shoes-off-at-the-door policy
- Skip gown at doctor's office
- Get massages by people, not chairs or electronic gadgets
- Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones
- Wear clothes twice before washing
- Write smaller and use both sides of each page
- No toilet paper for number one
- Eat ice cream in a cone instead of a plastic cup
- Take navy showers
- Abide by the ten-second rule
- Drive the speed limit
- Drink straight from the bottle
- Ask for only green gifts
- Drip-dry dishes in dishwasher rack above houseplants
- Learn shorthand to reduce paper use
- Use scrap paper for bookmarks
