Local Girl Scout Finds a Use for Withdrawn Books!

Ever wonder what happens to all those books the library withdraws from the collection? Some of them find a very good home with the help of individuals in our community.

Last summer I was approached by Elizabeth Otto, a senior at Ladywood High School and a senior Girl Scout from Troop 40870 in Canton, about donating books to help with her Gold Award project. Elizabeth was working with the Wayne Family Center located in Wayne, Michigan to provide books for the children of the families staying at the center. She planned to build a bookcase for the center and needed help in filling it. I worked with her all summer saving withdrawn books from our children’s department to help her achieve this goal. It was a great feeling working with such a wonderful individual on such a worthy project and to my surprise I was invited by Elizabeth to attend her Gold Award ceremony on May 17th at the EMU Convocation Center. Not only did we donate enough books to fill the bookcase she built but she collected over 670 books through the many book drives that were held. To accommodate this number of books, Lowes Building center donated the material and labor to build bookshelves in one room of the center, so they now have a library for everyone to enjoy.
