Love Stories From the Underground Railroad

Most individuals who ran away from slavery were single young men fleeing bondage alone or in pairs.  A number of couples also escaped along the Underground Railroad, however, motivated by the desire to be married and raise families in freedom.  Professor Finkenbine, from the University of Detroit Mercy,  will discuss three of these couples: teenage lovers George and Edy Duncan, who helped pioneer the route taken by freedom seekers heading to Canada; the light-skinned Ellen Craft, who masqueraded as a master traveling with his slave as she and her husband William ran away to freedom by “hiding in plain sight”; and Isaac Berry and Lucy Millard, an interracial couple who fell in love and escaped from Missouri to Windsor, Ontario, where they married.  They settled in Mecosta County, Michigan, after the Civil War.

Your Best 2017: Recognize Your Life Purpose and Plant Seeds for Personal Growth

Designing the next year of your life isn't about listing off all the material things you want. This workshop will take you deeper so that you can dig out what you may have been trying to cover up: Your Life Purpose. Once you know your mission for your life, the main reason why you're here on Earth, everything else falls into place.

In this 3 hour workshop, you will learn:

  • Techniques for clearing blocks, such as self-doubt, that have been preventing you from knowing your purpose and seeing it through.
  • A specific meditation to help you recognize truth and falseness in your physical body so you can make decisions confidently and stop taking detours which prolong your progress
  • A powerful daily practice to help you redesign your mind so that you can recognize and achieve your vision for the coming year.  We'll cover eight areas of your life, including life purpose, how you show your love in the world, how you view life, your financial desires, as well as physical, emotional, and intellectual self-expression. The practice, comparable to a "vision board," is a more in-depth and action-oriented approach that first requires you to reconsider the beliefs you've acquired in your life so you can redesign your beliefs and create an authentic vision, or mind garden.  Registration is required.
