New Horizons Band of Canton

Join us for a musical performance compliments of the New Horizons Band of Canton. New Horizons Music programs provide entry points to music making for adults, including those with no musical experience at all and those who were active in school music programs but have been inactive for a long time. The New Horizons Band of Canton is sponsored by Evola Music and will be joined by Irv Feldman and the Seek to Be Music Ministry for this performance. This free concert will take place Sunday June 8 at 2:00 PM. All ages welcome.

Tanabata Festival

Join us July 19th as we celebrate Tanabata, a Japanese Star Festival. This festival celebrates the once-a-year meeting of star lovers, the Ox Herder and the Weaver Princess, who are separated by the Milky Way during the other 364 days of the year.

To help us celebrate, members of the Japan Society of Detroit Women's Club will present the Tanabata story using Kamishibai, a Japanese form of storytelling. We will also participate in the Tanabata custom of writing wishes on long strips of colorful paper and then tying them to tree branches in the hopes that they will come true. In addition children will have the opportunity to try on Yukatas or summer kimonos.

This event will take place Saturday July 19th at 11:00 am.

hoopla Hoop - Hula Hoop Contest

Come and put your hula -hoop skills to the test! We are hosting a contest to celebrate hoopla, a multi-media platform that offers thousands of streaming and downloadable movies, music albums and audiobooks to the Canton community. The individual that hula-hoops the longest will walk away with a new android tablet, perfect for using hoopla! Staff will also be on hand to explain this awesome service in detail and help you set up an account! Contest participants are encouraged to bring their own hula - hoops if possible.  Join us Monday, June 23 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Knit Night - July

Join other handcrafters for an evening of sharing and learning. all ages and stages are welcome at this informal gathering on Monday July 14th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm Group Study Room A. Bring your own project, yarn and needles.

Pinterest Live - DIY SPA

Wondering if any of those homemade beauty product recipes on Pinterest actually work? Do you spend time pinning handmade scrubs and creams to a board thinking you will give them a whirl someday? Well let's roll up our sleeves together and bring some of those pins to life!  Join staff librarian and DIY enthusiast July 29th at 7:00 pm as we sample some recipes and recreate a few other.  Ages 12 and up. Registration required.

Make and Take a Hair Flower

Drop in for a crafting session June 23rd from 2:00 - 3:00 pm.  We will be layering silk daisy petals to create one of a kind flower hair clips.  We will have all of the  supplies you need  to create your own unique accessory.  Make a flower for yourself or someone you love.  All ages welcome.

Cooking Summer's Harvest

Join popular local chef Mary Spencer as she returns to the library and shares her delicious ideas for serving up summer's fresh produce. Chef Mary will demonstrate recipes designed to take advantage of all the wonderful goodies from your garden or the local farmer's market. Open Chess

Join us for informal open play as well as a tournament by the "Library Chess Clubs" on June  22 in the library Community Room. For tournament information and registration, please email clubchess@wowway.com. This chess meeting on June 22 at 1:00 to 5:00 PM is open to everyone from 10 to 100 years old.

RJ Spangler Trio Plus Larry Smith

Join us for a concert featuring the RJ Spangler Trio with special guest Detroit jazz sax great Larry Smith. Learn the history of Detroit's jazz & blues roots and listen to musical examples performed by this all star band. Tuesday July 15 7:00 PM.

Meet a Horse

This program will be held outside. Please dress for the weather.

Canton Public Library is pleased to welcome Jennifer Blades, the Coach of the University of Michigan's Equestrian team and owner of Willowbrooke Farm in Plymouth on Wednesday June 18th from 10:00 - 11:00 am. Jenny will bring a very special guest, one of her favorite school horses, Darien. She'll describe the basics of English riding skills and horse maintenance. Darien is a gentle, sweet horse and he loves kids! This is an outdoor event.

Well let's roll up our sleeves together and bring some of those great crafts on Pinterest to life!  Between now and May 19th, visit our "Pinterest Live" board and cast your vote for the project you would like to try.  To vote, simply click on the little heart to "like" the craft of your choice.  Then on May 27 at 7:00 PM,  join staff librarian and crafting enthusiast  Laura Fawcett as we work together to recreate the craft that receives the most votes.  Ages 12 and up.  Registration required for craft session.
