Happy Birthday, Ann M. Martin!

Ann M. Martin, one of my all-time favorite authors, is celebrating her 54th birthday today. Stop by the CPL to check out one of her many awesome books. From the Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels, to the Main Street series, there's plenty to keep you busy. For further information on Ann, you can even check out her website. Happy reading!

Wacky Festival Alert!

August 7-9 marks the 34th Annual Twins Day Festival, held in Twinsburg, OH. This yearly festival is the world's largest gathering of twins according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Even if you aren't a twin and won't be attending this festival, why not enjoy your own Twins Day celebration with some of our fabulous fictional stories about twins. My favorite is Avi and Rachel Vail's Never Mind! A Twin Novel. Happy Reading!

An Anne Frank Diary Anniversay

Saturday, August 1, marks the 65th anniversary of Anne Frank's last diary entry. Written while her family was in hiding from the Nazis, the diary has gone on to become a beloved classic around the world. The library owns several copies of the book, including abridged versions for younger readers. There are also many other Holocaust survivor books available to further your knowledge of this tragic period in history.

Happy 308th Birthday Detroit!

Did you know that Detroit was founded on July 24, 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac? Commemorate the occasion with Madame Cadillac's Ghost by Janie Lynn Panagopoulos - a fun mystery about two kids left on their own to explore the Detroit Historical Museum (pictured left). If you get the chance, why not have your own adventure at the DHM? Admission is free during the month of July so it's definitely worth the trip!

New Puppet Kits Are Here!

Our new puppet kits have arrived and are currently being processed. Put yourself on hold for my personal favorite: Mama Cat Has Three Kittens by Denise Fleming. The adorable kitty puppets do a great job of bringing this story to life for your children.

In need of more scares?

If you're enjoying this month's Tween book club selection and would like reading some more spooky stories, why not try Scared Witless: Thirteen Eerie Tales to Tell or The Scary States of America? These books contain lots of great stories (some spooky, others goofy), and they're particularly fun to share around a summer campfire!

Spooky Summer Read

Hey everyone going into 5th or 6th grade this fall - are you looking for a fun, spooky read this summer? Then sign up for the library's July Tween book discussion. This month we're reading Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn. It's about a girl named Ali trying to solve a ghostly mystery during her summer vacation at a cottage in Maine. Registration begins on Saturday, July 4, and we'll discuss the book over a pizza lunch on Saturday, July 18, from 1-2pm. Hope to see you then!

Fun Holiday Alert

Did you know that Friday, June 26, is the 10th Annual Take Your Dog to Work Day? This holiday is all about celebrating man's best friend and encouraging folks to look into pet adoption. Even if you don't have a dog and can't get one anytime soon, why not celebrate the day with a fun dog story? My favorites are John Grogan's Marley books. He's written everything from children's easy readers to memoirs for adults, so there's something for the whole family!

Summer Reads

In case the forecasted inclement weather keeps you away from Liberty Fest this weekend, why not stay home and curl up with a fun read about other folks' summer vacations? A couple of my favorites are The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place (by E. L. Konigsburg) and A Corner of the Universe (by Ann M. Martin). These books are fun to read even when the weather isn't overcast and rainy.

Gear Up For Getting Creative!

Gear up for this year's summer reading theme (Get Creative @ Your Library) by checking out Blue Balliett's Chasing Vermeer or The Calder Game. These art-inspired mysteries are a lot of fun and when you finish you can check out the related games on Scholastic's website.

Lil' Fingers Website

Looking for a fun and educational website for your toddler? Why not give Lil' Fingers a try? This website features materials like simple games, short online stories, and coloring sheets. It's completely free, so check it out if you'd like something new to do with your kids.

June Tween Book & Pizza

Tweens, don't forget to sign up for June's Tween Book & Pizza Club! This month we're reading David Lubar's Flip, a funny story about kids who discover alien disks that let them transform into legendary people from the past. We're meeting on Saturday, June 6, from 1-2pm and I can't wait to hear what you think!

Get Ready for Memorial Day Weekend

Need something to help pass the time this Memorial Day weekend? Why not try Who Stole Uncle Sam? It's a fun mystery about two kids trying to find the missing Uncle Sam at a Memorial Day race. There's plenty of other great reads at the CPL, too, so make sure to stop by before heading out of town!

Enjoy Some Historical Fiction

Did you know that today marks the founding anniversary of Jamestown, VA? Yep, on May 14, 1607 this first permanent English settlement in the U.S. was established. Why not commemorate the day with a great historical fiction book set in the Jamestown colony? We've got plenty to choose from!

New Puppet Arrivals!

Our new shipment of Folkmanis puppets has arrived and these cute friends are ready to go home and play with you! Check out some of my personal favorites: Frog in a Spaceship or Frog Prince - they're awesome!
