Women in the Military

Debra Drummond, president of the local Women Marines Association, will speak of the opportunities and excitement of being a woman in the United States Marine Corps. She also will share the many benefits that are available to former military women who might not be taking full advantage. Join us at 7:00PM on Thursday, May 6th in the Community Room for a great video and informative conversation.

Up the Rouge

Former Detroit News reporter, Joel Thurtell, and former photographer, Patricia Beck, tell their tale of traveling up the Rouge River by canoe. The trip was an eye-opening experience of beauty, destruction, pollution and hope. Now in book form, their travels are documented for all to see. Won't you join us for this unique look at our environment and the good, bad and ugly that we have created over the years.

Local Author Event

It's time for the fourth annual Local Author Event. There are still a few slots open for local authors to share their stories and books with us on Thursday, May 13 at 7:00PM. Please contact Marcia at (734) 397-0999 x1079 if you are a published author and would like to participate. The authors will each be given a few minutes to speak and will then retire to their respective tables to sell their books and talk with fans.

Book & Author Luncheon

Local television reporter Alysia Sofios was assigned to investigate the worst mass murder in the history of Fresno. The breaking news soon became something much more — a hope-filled relationship that changed the lives of the young reporter and the survivors of this unimaginable crime.
The Friends of the Canton, Plymouth, Northville and Novi libraries host their annual author luncheon at Fox Hills Country Club on Friday, May 7. Alysia Sofios, Canton born and bred, will share her amazing story and book, Where Hope Begins, as we enjoy a delicious lunch. Tickets now on sale at the library reception desk.

Author & Adventurer, Pam Flowers

Adventurer and author, Pam Flowers, returns to Michigan from her home in Alaska to share her latest adventure of dog sledding to the Magnetic North Pole. Pam will share two books that are the result of her travels:
Magnetic North: A Journey to the Magnetic North Pole and Douggie: The Playful Pup Who Became a Sled Dog Hero. Bring the entire family on Thursday, March 25 at 7:00PM in the Community Room. You really must meet this incredible, brave woman.

Guilty?

The Michigan State Police Forensic Lab presents its own version of CSI-style crime solving techniques, only this is the real thing! Trooper Nicole Bock, Forensic Scientist Guy Nutter and Laboratory Commander F/Lt. Charles Morden will present this fascinating look in conjunction with our popular Everyone's Reading program. The forensics tie in very nicely with Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent, the original courtroom thriller. Join us in the Community Room on Tuesday, March 16, at 7:00PM for a thrilling evening.

Tchaikovsky Spectacular!

Plymouth Symphony Music Director and Conductor, Nan Washburn, will present a multi-media presentation on the Life and Music of Tchaikovsky on Thursday, March 4, at 7:00PM. Come hear this presentation in the library Community Room and have an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to the Tchaikovsky Spectacular at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill on Saturday, March 13th at 7:30PM. It's a win/win opportunity for all.

All About Pianos

Everything you wanted to know about pianos will be discussed by the experts from Evola Music in Canton. They will even take a piano apart so we can see the inner workings. Learn the history, how they're made and how to select the perfect piano for your needs. I bet we'll even hear a little music.

Lincoln in the Courtroom with Judge Ron Lowe

Join us as Judge Ron Lowe, 35th district court judge in Plymouth, shares his characterization of Abraham Lincoln as a courtroom lawyer.  We can compare Lincoln's courtroom to our modern day courtrooms as portrayed in Scott Turow's "Presumed Innocent", the Everyone's Reading selection and original courtroom thriller.
Monday, February 22nd at 7:00 pm in the library community room.  Join the community dialogue by joining in the community read of "Presumed Innocent."

Everyone's Reading 2010

Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow is the 2010 Everyone's Reading selection. This novel defined the legal thriller genre and has an infamous surprise ending that most of us don't see coming. Everyone's Reading promotes community dialogue through the shared experience of reading the same book. Pick up a copy of Presumed Innocent at the Canton Public Library and join the discussion.
 
Author Scott Turow will make a special appearance at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill this evening at 7 PM.  A limited number of unclaimed tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, in the theatre lobby beginning at 6 PM.

Adult Contemporary Book Discussion Group

The Adult Contemporary Book Discussion Group meets the third Monday of each month in the library Conference Room. This self-directed group discusses contemporary fiction and non fiction at 7:00PM. There is no registration necessary. The 2010 book list was just published, so please join us for some fine reading:

Reflexology with Deanna Proske

Reflexology is the scientific study and manipulation of corresponding areas in the hands or feet to organs in your body to reduce stress, encourage good health and promote relaxation. Canton's own Deanna Proske will share the art of reflexology with us on Wednesday, January 20 at 7 pm in the library Community Room. Registration is available online.

Learn About Yoga

Join Canton resident Sharon Brand and learn about the benefits of Yoga. Sharon has nine years experience teaching the flowing style of Hatha Yoga. We offer this program as a way to promote Canton's 100 Days of Health.
Only a few spots remain, so register online soon. Wear loose fitting clothing, bring a mat or beach towel and bring a water bottle. Let's stretch, bend and breathe with Sharon on Thursday, January 14th at 7:00PM in the library's Community Room.
