Everybody Loves Zombies!

I don't know if you've heard, but Robert Kirkman's survival horror comic book series The Walking Dead is soon going to be a TV series on AMC! Really. I'm not joking. I decided to pick this up recently, and man is it entertaining. I recommend checking it out before the series airs. I'm hooked enough that I'm now digging into book two. Kirkman basically explores what might happen if a zombie movie kept the camera rolling. After the initial survival frenzy, what would it be like trying to live your life in a Zombie apocalypse? What would that do to people? It makes for interesting reading, let me say. Can't wait to finish book two and get into book three...

Moribito

You may not know that the epic, fantasy anime Moribito: guardian of the spirit (shown occasionally late night on Cartoon Network) was originally a kids book by Nahoko Uehashi, and that there is now a sequel, Morbito II : guardian of the darkness! This series follows a wondering female bodyguard Balsa, and is set in a world similar to ancient Japan. If you dig a little historical fiction with sword fighting, or if you just want see the original inspiration for the anime, you might want to take a look.

Worst Comedy Club in the World Sat. 10/3 1-4pm

Try Comedy Improv Saturday, October 3 from 1:00-4:00PM. Teens in grades 7-12 can join us for some improv comedy games “Whose line?” style. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be great at this. In fact, one of our games is a competition for telling the worst jokes ever. Come to watch or to partake; it’s all good!

Code Geass

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of giant robot shows normally, but I gotta say Code Geass is some good stuff. If you haven't watched it yet you are missing out. Think Gundam crossed with Death Note. Tight, ingenious plotting, lots of action, but also good tense moments of character development. It's just so enjoyable watching Lelouch mysteriously pull himself out of one impossible situation after another. We will be getting the 2nd two discs of the 2nd season in pretty soon (R2).

Genius!

I am reminded more and more why I like Girl Genius. Everyone has their favorite web comics, but I thought I'd put out a mention to this one by Phil and Kaja Foglio if you are looking for a good sci-fi fantasy read. It's got romance, humor, a talking cat, possession by otherworldly beings, and a girl who builds mad scientist machines...and, most importantly, it's got very likable characters and an interesting storyline. Check it out.

Teen Action Adventure Fantasy Books

So, you liked Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. You like a good fantasy with some adventure to it, some excitement. No slow, bogged down stories where nothing really happens for you. Well, check out these titles for a little magic thrill:

More Prince of Persia

You've played the Prince of Persia video games, you've heard there is a movie in the works, now read the graphic novel. It's written by the same creator as the award winning video games. The Prince of Persia storylines have always been some of my favorite bits of storytelling, and this new tale in graphic novel form is no exception. Check it out.

Hero Tales

O.K., you can officially be excited now; Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, has a new manga coming stateside this October: Hero Tales. It's an historical fiction / fantasy action series about a boy who's destined to be a hero and the magical sword he's questing after. Yeah, you've heard that set up before, but this is Hiromu Arakawa we are talking about! I for one can't wait to see what surprises are in store for this...

Pokemon Tournament Sept. 5

Join us Saturday, September 5th between 1:00 and 5:00PM for our Pokemon Tournament. Bring your Nintendo DS and your copy of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl or Platinum for a tournament style poké-throwdown the likes of which you’ve never seen! No registration required.

Rin-Ne

The newest manga from Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of such legendary series as Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2, is on its way. Rin-Ne reads to me like some cross between Bleach and Inuyasha with a bit of comedic romance thrown in. A girl who sees spirits and a boy who hunts them down...in anyone else's hands this premise might seem cliche, but Takahashi spins it in a very original way. It's fantastic so far (I'm hooked). We will be getting our copy of the first volume here in Oct., but you can also check it out online at Viz's site therumicworld.
