Hope and Comics
Eisner winner Hope Larson's newest offering, Mercury, is split between past and present as two girls in the same family line struggle with love, tragedy, and gold prospecting — yes, your read that right — with just the slightest hint of the supernatural. This story is just so perfectly told, with art that is simple yet very evocative and inventive. If you're a fan of comics then check this out. Oh, and in case you're curious, Larson's next project is tackling the graphic novel adaption of A Wrinkle In Time.

Conspiracy is here at last!
Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series is one of the finest at delivering political intrigue in a fantasy setting. Maybe it helps that there is very little magic (the world is grounded in real actions and consequences — usually), and it doesn't hurt that one of the main characters is a conniving, lying, well...thief. My only complaint is that it takes so long for her books to come out, but, rejoice, her latest is here! Conspiracy of Kings tells the story of Sophos, the young boy and would be king of Sounis, with a few guest appearances from some old favorites along the way. For nail biting twists and turns aplenty check this series out.

Bleach the live action movie and...musical?!
Word on the street is that the hit manga Bleach may get made into a new, live action film for U.S. audiences. Bleach has been an anime, a manga, a trading card game, a video game, and even a musical. Yes, a musical. In fact, there have been at least 5 different Bleach musicals in Japan. Check out this article.

Stitches: a memoir
All I can say is this book is amazing. OK, maybe I should explain a bit more. David Small is an artist usually known for his award winning picture books, but here he brings us something very different. Stitches is a darker tale for a much older audience. It's an autobiographical account of his own childhood, a childhood that was not all sunshiny, let me warn you... it's unsettling, it's moving, it's powerful — perhaps in part because it's true; it's one of those books that amazes you with its ability to tell so much with so few words. A masterpiece. Check it out.

Incarceron
Incarceron is one of the more wildly imaginative books I've read in a while. Forests made out of metal, airships inside, and animals that might have a bit wiring weaved into their veins. The narrative winds between a boy trapped inside a futuristic, living prison and a girl on the outside, in a faux 17th century world, trying to get him out. The outside world has outlawed technology and everyone is forced to live "in period", though occasionally people cheat, which makes for some intersting scenes...like a scullery maid secretly whipping out a laser wand to get rid of her wrinkles... Try this for a fresh, original fantasy.

Omnibus Evil
Check out the first two of our newly arrived Star Wars omnibus comic collections — close to 400 pages of jedi goodness. It's the type of book that just feels good to hold in your hands, and it doesn't hurt that the comics are good too. Rise of the Sith and Menace Revealed give you each a taste of dark jedi and bounty hunters alike. Yeah, you get the familiar good guys thrown in there, like Qui-Gon and Mace Windu, trying to save the day, but be honest, it's the bad guys that have you hooked. It's o.k. I won't tell anyone you've joined the dark side. It'll be our little secret. Take a peek.

Iron-Mania
Does the anticipation for Iron-Man 2 this summer have you going crazy? Well, tide yourself over with a little Invincible Iron Man: World's Most Wanted. One of the best Iron-man storylines in a long while, Tony Stark, no longer head of S.H.I.E.L.D., is a hunted man on the run. He's trying to wipe his own mind to make sure secrets stay hidden, avoid capture...plus Pepper Potts gets her own Iron-armor. Good stuff; take a peek.

Getting Guys to Read
Boys have trouble reading. It's true. Girls totally blow us away at this, I'm ashamed to say. The Michigan Reading Association cites factors such as the need for boys to be more active and the fact that if they don't see other guys reading then they don't think of it as a 'guys' activity. Check out the pamphlet attached to get some tips for getting guys to pick up a book. I'll give you a hint: 'Forcing' them to read isn't on the list. Fathers reading to their sons is.[photo by Cayusa]

I <3 Ninjas
So, you like ninjas. You're a fan of Naruto. But, you're also a romance junky. Admit it. You also kind of think all the female characters in Naruto are kind of weak. Well, then I've got the perfect thing for you: Tail of the Moon. Strong female lead, shinobi missions, and a love story to round it all out. Or, check out Shinobi Life for a mix of action and romance in even amounts. Hey, there's nothing that says you can't have your ninja and romance fix at the same time. Go ahead.

DC / Marvel Animation on Its Way
Check out the latest slew of animated comic book adaptions we've got on the way. Be warned, these videos are a little edgier (and a touch more violent) than your standard Saturday morning cartoon fare, partially because they try to stay truer to their comic book origins. It makes for some good storytelling though. We've got several fan favorites, including Hulk, Justice League, Wonder Woman, Superman / Batman, and Green Lantern.
