Lovely and Dangerous

I'm talking about the book and also the horses…

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater is about killer horses. Magical, man-eating, maiming-people-within-the-first-few-chapters horses from the sea. And people who ride them. Don't roll your eyes at me. I'm serious. And, it's brilliant. Stiefvater somehow pulls off this strange mix of horror and horses and romance. Yes, it's also a love story. It's also a broken people finding each other story. A turning to animals when others let you down story. The animals just happen to be man-eating horses from the sea. The result is nothing short of beautiful. Check it out.

Adventure and Mystery Books

Enjoy books like The 39 Clues? Looking for something else with adventure and mystery? Try some of these:

NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society by Michael Buckley

A world without heroes by Brandon Mull

The name of this book is secret by Pseudonymous Bosch

Mindless Popcorn Action

Au revoir, crazy European chick by Joe Schreiber — is the type of book that's great for turning your brain off and just having a good time. It's short. It's got a great initial hook (boy mistakenly takes an assassin to prom), and it's got explosions. Lots of explosions. What more can I say? Sure, the plot is ludicrous. Sure, it's a little shallow. It's no Crime and Punishment, but hey, that's the point for some: no punishment. Just action. If you're looking for a book like a summer blockbuster, then give this a try.

Super Villain, Secret Agent

Venom by Rick Remender takes the classic spider-man villain and turns him into a secret agent for the side of good. Really; I'm not kidding. Flash Thompson is the new guy in the (evil?) alien suit, and he's doing military missions for the government. There's just one catch: they've got a "bomb" strapped to him in case the "living" suit gets out of his control. It's a great new twist to this old character, and if you love bad guys turned good, give this one a read.

Smoke and Bone

Daughter of smoke & bone by Laini Taylor takes the paranormal romance genre and serves it up with a mad-cap creativity all its own. If I explained the plot it might sound ordinary: Tough as nails girl with unknown parents. Mysterious angel figure. Girl consorts with demons (or does she?). Forbidden romance ensues. But trust me, it's not ordinary. Scorpion mice, a wishmonger looking for teeth, castles inside of a cage. This is a fast paced read that is wholly original with a heroine that's easy to root for. My only complaint is that it ends just as it gets rolling, and the sequel's not out yet.

Arata

Arata : the legend. Vol. 1 — Yu Watase, normally known for her  shojo series (such as Absolute Boyfriend) tackles the shonen genre here. Two guys from different worlds, one a modern day student, the other pretending to be the next ruling princess of a magical land (it's a long story), suddenly switch places. Watase demenstrates she's a master of either genre, as she spins a fantasy yarn similar to her Fushigi Yugi but this time with a bit more action, shonen-style. The 7th volume has just come out, and this series just keeps getting better.
