International Women's Day is a worldwide celebration created in the nineteen-teens to recognize the equal rights of women specifically in labor and suffrage. Today, this celebration takes many forms in different countries. In honor of this day which also takes place during Women's History Month, we offer the following list of historical dramas on these themes of labor, suffrage, and equal rights.

Salt of the earth [videodisc]

A semi-documentary of the year-long struggle by Chicano zinc miners in New Mexico striking against unsafe working conditions. When an injunction is issued against the workers from picketing, the wives take up battle with a fury, leaving the husbands to care for home and children. They finally overcome the forces of the mine owner and the law that backs them up.

Suffragette [videodisc]

Inspired by true events, a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of the women who risked everything in their fight for equality in early 20th century Britain. The story centers on Maud, a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst, Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life..

Umberto Eco, 1932-2016

Umberto Eco, the Italian author and scholar most know for his 1980 book turned movie "The Name of the Rose," passed away at the age of 84 in Milan, Italy on February 19th, 2016. We have a number of his fiction and nonfiction titles available as well as the 1986 film adaptation starring Sean Connery.

Tiger Stadium Documentary "Stealing Home"

"Stealing Home", winner of the recent Freep Film Festival audience award, chronicles the history of Tiger Stadium and the recent action of the Navin Field Grounds Crew to resurrect and maintain the remaining footprint of this historic location. This film presents the day-to-day activities of the Grounds Crew alongside historic imagery of the field from the past 100 years. Join us on Wednesday, June 18, 7:00-8:45 PM, as we watch this fantastic piece of Detroit Tiger history and then join director Jason Roche, Professor of Communication Studies at University of Detroit-Mercy, for an informative Q&A. This presentation is open to patrons of all ages and is a must-see for baseball fans and history buffs alike. This is also a CYS Game On: On the Scene approved program. Green Opportunities in the City of Detroit

In honor of Earth Week, which includes Earth Day and Arbor Day, we will have representatives from The Greening of Detroit on hand to discuss what they are doing to transform the physical, and metaphorical, landscape of Detroit. For over two decades, this non-profit organization has been instrumental in spear-heading green initiatives, most notably the repatriation of trees, in conjunction with the City of Detroit and Detroit Public Schools. If you are interested in learning about an innovative and fun project focused on the revitalization of the city, and how you can get involved, please join us on April 24 from 7:00-8:00 PM for this event. There will be the opportunity to sign up for tree-planting and park clean-up volunteer activities as well as enroll in the Citizen Forester program.
