60th Anniversary of "A Christmas Carol"

A Christmas carol — You know the holiday season has arrived when we receive another copy of A Christmas Carol for the collection. The original version starring Alastair Sim as Scrooge is celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a special edition, which includes an introduction by Leonard Maltin. So take time out from the holiday shopping, gather up the family and make some popcorn and enjoy this holiday classic.

CPL Withdrawn Books Adventures

Our Adult Fiction Committee has been doing a great job of reviewing their collection and making room for new titles. Last week the withdraw cart was full of great titles but the condition of the books were gently used. What to do? Never fear — one of our volunteers, Pam Gillis, came to the rescue. She has been sending books to our troops in Afghanistan for their enjoyment and took a look at the cart of books and pulled over 75% of the titles to send.

Girl Scout Troop 40196 Book Campaign

Withdrawing books is an ongoing process at the library, and our thoughts are always on being “green” when it comes to disposing of withdrawn books. I have once again had the pleasure of working with the Girl Scouts. Maha Zahid, a member of Troop 40196 in Canton stared working this summer on her Silver Award and her plan was to set up a book donation campaign to collect books for Bennett Elementary School in Detroit. Bennett Elementary was closed in 2007 because of a fire and has been undergoing renovations with a scheduled reopening date of August 29th, but there were not enough funds to replace the library. Maha decided to help and contacted us about setting up a drop off box in the library. One thing led to another and we spent the summer donating withdrawn children’s books. Every Wednesday, Maha and her mother picked up the books from the library for delivery to Bennett this August.

Local Girl Scout Finds a Use for Withdrawn Books!

Ever wonder what happens to all those books the library withdraws from the collection? Some of them find a very good home with the help of individuals in our community.

This Month on DVD at the Library

New this month on DVD is Conviction directed by Tony Goldwyn. This is the true story of Betty Ann Waters and her struggle to free her brother, Kenny who is sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit. The movie follows Betty Ann's 18 year journey to set Kenny free, as she completes her GED, graduates law and the complications of a new trial. This real life drama touches on the legal system, justice and the strength of a sister and brother love. With an all star cast and a great story the running time of 103 minutes should fly by. So grab some popcorn and enjoy.

Masterpiece Contemporary

If you're a fan of history and “Masterpiece Theater,” you should check out God on Trial, the new DVD added to our collection. Written by Frank Cottrell Boyce and directed by Andy De Emmony, it takes place during a 24 hour period in Auschwitz after the ritual of selection has taken place and new inmates have arrived.
