Canton Seniors Book Discussion: June 27, 2012
Canton Seniors Book Discussion Group will meet on Wednesday, June 27 from 2:00-3:00 PM in Group Study Room A. This month we are discussing:
Old friends by Tracy Kidder — What is it like to grow old in America? Two men, strangers to each other, are assigned to share a room upon moving into a western Massachusetts nursing home. Kidder spotlights the friendship that blooms between Joe, an irascible 72-year-old stroke victim, and gentle Lou, 90 and almost blind, who grieves for his deceased wife, tells rambling stories about his past and worries about Joe. Author Tracy Kidder has won Pulitzer Prizes for both his fiction and non-fiction works.

Older Americans Month 2012
May is Older Americans Month and this year's theme is Never Too Old to Play. Canton Public Library offers several opportunities to play in May. On Thursday, May 3 view the new documentary Honor Flight Michigan. Travel with a group of Michigan's World War II veterans to Washington, DC, visit the National World War II Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, and catch up with old war buddies. The Canton Seniors Book Group meets on Wednesday, May 23 to discuss the 2012 Everyone's Reading selection, Lethal by Sandra Brown and on Thursday, May 24 sing along with former New Christy Minstrels member, Jackie Davidson and her partner, Gary Brandt as they sing the good old songs again.- Login to comment
National Jelly Bean Day
Still have jelly beans leftover from your Easter basket? Then share them with your friends in celebration of National Jelly Bean Day on April 22. Primarily made of sugar, jelly beans are the descendant of the Middle Eastern confection, Turkish Delight. William Schrafft, a Boston confectioner began selling jelly beans in 1861 but they really took off in 1905 when an advertisement appeared in the Chicago Daily News selling jelly beans in bulk packages. Masterpiece Mystery returns on May 6, 2012. Kicking off the new season will be Sherlock! Season 2 starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes. David Suchet returns as Hercule Poirot. It is the final season for Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot. Zen, Inspector Lewis, Case Histories, and Inspector Morse are all returning.

Canton Seniors Book Discussion: May 23, 2012
Canton Seniors Book Discussion group will meet on Wednesday, May 23 from 2:00-3:00 PM in Canton Public Library's Group Study Room A. We are reading the Everyone's Reading 2012 choice:
Lethal by Sandra Brown — When her four year old daughter informs her a sick man is in their yard, Honor Gillette rushes out to help him. But that "sick" man turns out to be Lee Coburn, a man accused of murdering seven people the night before.

The Great Michigan Read 2011-2012
The Great Michigan Read 2011-2012 is drawing to a close. This year's selection has inspired displays and discussions across the states in public libraries and schools. The author, Kevin Boyle, received his undergraduate degree from University of Detroit-Mercy and his doctorate from University of Michigan. He is presently teaching at Ohio State University. Arc of Justice won the National Book Award in 2004 and was named Michigan Notable Book in 2005.
