2010 Mystery Awards Announced @ Bouchercon by the Bay

Bouchercon 2010 is a memory now. Named in honor of the late Anthony Boucher — mystery writer, mystery critic and mystery fan — this largest world mystery convention met in San Francisco and has been dubbed "Bouchercon by the Bay." Bouchercon emphasizes the best in mystery fiction by providing the setting for the presentation the Macavity Awards, the Barry Awards, the Shamus Awards, Bouchercon’s own Anthony Awards, and the Crimespree and Derringer awards. Bouchercon 2011 — Spirits of St. Louis will meet September 15-18 in St. Louis, Missouri.

New Addition to the Copy Center: Optelec Viewer

The Canton Lions recently donated a new Optelec Viewer to assist Canton Public Library patrons who have low vision by magnifying text, pictures, and other physical items. The Optelec Viewer is a very powerful closed-circuit television magnifying reading system. Our thanks to the Canton Lions for their generous donation to the community!

Canton Seniors Book Discussion - November 18, 2009

This month, the Canton Seniors Book Discussion group which is held at The Summit, will meet on the third Wednesday of the month, November 18th. at 2:00PM to discuss The Art of Mending by Elizabeth Berg. Ms. Berg's novel looks at the consequences of one family member's revelations at an annual family reunion. Copies of Ms. Berg's book are available at Canton Public Library at the Adult Reference Desk.

Flu Shots for Canton Seniors Rescheduled

The Summit on the Park has canceled the Senior Flu Shot Clinic that was scheduled for Wednesday, October 21. The flu vaccine will not be ready until the beginning of November, and the clinic will be rescheduled as soon as further information is available. The clinic is overseen by the Visiting Nurses Association as is for the seasonal flu not the H1N1 Virus. Bich Minh Nguyen's Great Michigan Read Author Tour

The Michigan Humanities Council announced the details for Bich Minh Nguyen, author of Stealing Buddha's Dinner, to tour Michigan as part of the Council's 2009-2010 Great Michigan Read. The Council will bring Nguyen to five Michigan cities - Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Midland, Lansing, and Plymouth - from October 13-17, 2009. The public is invited to each event, but seating is limited. All events are free except where noted. A book signing will be provided at each location. Those interested are encouraged to contact each of the sites for more information.

"Always Say Goodbye"

Stuart Kaminsky, a former Grandmaster of the Mystery Writers of America and author of many mystery series and stand-alone novels, died Friday, October 9, 2009 at the age of 75. His four series featuring Lew Fonesca, Abe Lieberman,Toby Peters,and Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov were extremely popular. Kaminsky's Inspector Rostnikov novel A Cold Red Sunrise received the 1989 Edgar Award for Best Novel. He earned six other Edgar nominations, most recently for the 2005 non-fiction book "Behind the Mystery: Top Mystery Writers Interviewed", which was also nominated for an Anthony Award, a Macavity Awards, and an Agatha Award.

George Pelecanos Wins 2008 Hammett Award

The North American Branch of the Association of Crime Writers announced that The Turnaround by George Pelecanos (Little, Brown), has been named the winner of the organization's annual Hammett Prize for a work of literary excellence in the field of crime writing.

"Wolf Hall" Wins Man Booker Award for Fiction

Hilary Mantel’s historical novel set in 16th-century Britain has won the £50,000 ($79,400) Man Booker Prize for Fiction. Wolf Hall (Fourth Estate) is the story of Thomas Cromwell’s tumultuous rise in the Tudor court.

Elmore Leonard Receives PEN Lifetime Achievement Award

The literary organization PEN USA said that it would give its Lifetime Achievement Award to Elmore Leonard the prolific crime fiction novelist. In a career spanning 60 years, Leonard has published 43 novels and numerous short stories, creating a distinct literary style that has delighted readers and influenced a new generation of writers. The award will be presented to Mr. Leonard at a ceremony in Beverly Hills on Dec. 2.

Great Michigan Read's "Stealing Buddha's Dinner" on Facebook

During the week of October 26, the Michigan Humanities Council will initiate an online dialogue with high school classrooms and residents across the state. The dialogue will focus on Stealing Buddha's Dinner, perspectives presented in Nguyen's author tour, and the themes of cultural understanding, immigration stories, and contemporary history. The public is invited to participate, at the Council's Facebook Discussion Forum.

Reasons to Get That Flu Shot

This is National Adult Immunization Month.  The National Foundation for Infectous Diseases sites a multitude of reasons everyone should get a flu shot, but people over the age of 65 are particularly vulnerable.  Each year, on average, 36,000 people in the United States die from seasonal influenza complications. Greater than 90% of deaths occur in persons 65 years of age and older.  So call your health care provider and get that shot!

Lyn Hamilton, author of the Lara McClintoch series passed away last month on September 10.  Ms. Hamilton's Arthur Ellis Award nominated series featured Canadian antiques dealer and amateur detective,  Lara McClintoch.

Repairman Jack

F. Paul Wilson's latest Repairman Jack book, Ground Zero, will be released this week.
