Author Ariana Franklin's Passing

Just read this in The Rap Sheet:

Late though I am to attending to this matter, I want to acknowledge the passing on Thursday of British novelist Ariana Franklin. Born in Devon and a former Fleet Street journalist, she was the author of four books featuring 12th-century English coroner-investigator Adelia Aguilar (including Mistress of the Art of Death, which won the 2007 Ellis Peters Historical Dagger Award).

Beginning Tuesday, February 1 through April 12, 2011 Free Tax Counseling for Canton's Senior taxpayers with low to moderate income will be available at the Canton Senior Center in The Summit. Appointments for those qualifying for this service will be taken beginning January 11. Resolved: Learn a New Language

Mango Languages, a language program designed especially for travelers, has added more languages. This language learning database, available to Canton Public Library cardholders, teaches practical conversation and cultural awareness for the world’s most popular languages.

Resolution: Create a Family Health Tree

The U. S. Surgeon General has created an online tool called My Family Health portrait to help families gather medical information. Because many diseases have a genetic component, families can become more aware of the health risks they may face. The Surgeon General recommends learning the medical history of at least three generations. The tool they've developed has questions you should ask. The website assures complete privacy for participants.

Memory Loss

When is memory loss cause for concern? Possible signs are forgetting common words and using odd ones in their place, asking the same questions repeatedly, becoming lost in familiar places, mood swings, misplacing items in odd places… In these instances it is important to seek medical help sooner rather than later in the event it is Alzheimer's. However, simple forgetfulness could be the result of fever, dehydration, vitamin deficiency, poor nutrition… To sharpen the brain experts recommend memory games and crossword puzzles. To boost your memory, post a large calendar to record appointments and make a to-do list.

Joe Gores (1931-2011), author of the Daniel Kearney and Associates (DAK) series died on Monday, January 10. Mr. Gores was a three-time winner of the Edgar Award, won the Maltese Falcon Award (Japan's highest award in the mystery field), and was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America. In addition to his novels, he wrote scripts for Kojak, Remington Steele, and Magnum, P.I.

Chocolate for Alzheimer Patients

In a New York Times article about Alzheimer's Disease called The Vanishing Mind, the benefits of chocolate as a soother for aggitated nursing home patients was extolled. This is just one of alternative ways to treat individuals with Alzheimer's Physicians researchers are investigating.

Holmes' creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 4 books and 56 short stories featuring the detective and his assistant, Dr. John Watson. According to the Guinness Book of World records, 75 actors have portrayed Sherlock Holmes in over 211 films.
