Cecil Young spoke about the proposed Volunteer Code of Conduct policy and of his desire that the non-discrimination clause language be altered to include "sexual orientation" and "gender identification" as protected classes in the policy. He indicated that he believes that the library will appear to be a more inclusive and welcoming place to a younger generation of library users if the proposed changes are made.

Girl Scouts Spearhead Book Donation Drive

Girl Scouts Maha Zahid and Christina Christianson need your help to restock Detroit's Bennet Elementary School library, which was destroyed by fire. Bring in your new or gently-used books (for ages preschool through grade 5) to the Canton Public Library through this Sunday (July 17). Chapter books, accelerated reader books and reference books (dictionaries, thesauruses and encyclopedias) are needed the most. The pair organized the book drive as a community project to demonstrate the leadership skills necessary to achieve the Girl Scout Cadette's Silver Award.

Volunteer During the Dog Days This Summer

Adults or teens (14-18 years old) can volunteer to help at our Best in Show Dog Show on Saturday, August 6 (9:00AM-1:00PM). We need 2 or 3 volunteers to help with the dogs (keep them watered and tidy), hand out prizes, etc. Applications should be turned in to the Reception Desk by 9:00PM on Tuesday, July 5.

Win Free Gas for a Year!

Sign up to donate blood (and be entered in a drawing for free gas for a year) at the next American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Canton Public Library (Friday, June 10th). There is a critical shortage of blood at this time (a crucial 100-pint drive in Lincoln Park was cancelled due to a power outage), so everyone's participation is requested. Appointments are available (11:00AM-4:45PM) at the Reception Desk, or just walk in on the day.

Like Your Library Neat and Tidy? Volunteer!

We are now accepting applications for the following volunteer position:

Position Summary

Adults or teens are needed to assist the library building supervisor in keeping the library grounds clean.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pick up items of trash and other debris from library parking lots and grassy areas

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to work in outdoor areas
  • Ability to walk the entire library property
  • Ability to use both hands to carry materials used for clean-up

This volunteer position will commence immediately. Volunteer shifts for this position are flexible: approximately one hour per week between the hours of 9:00AM and 3:00PM (volunteer’s choice of day, Monday through Friday).

Applicants should complete a Volunteer Application and return it to the Reception Desk.

Computer-Savvy Teen Volunteers Needed

Position Summary

Teens (aged 14-18) are needed to assist patrons with computer- and Internet-related questions or problems. In addition to computer software and Internet skills, qualifying applicants will be friendly and approachable, at ease and eager to work with patrons of all ages and levels of ability.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help library patrons with questions re: Microsoft software applications
  • Help patrons with Internet-related questions (including how to get on the web and how to perform Internet searches)
  • Assist patrons in setting up email accounts, placing Craigslist ads, creating and posting to Facebook pages, and working with other social networking sites
  • Assist patrons in filling out and posting/uploading online resumes and applications
