The 3rd annual World Math Day will take place on March 4, 2009. Children from around the world will be uniting to answer a record breaking number of mental arithmatic questions.  Unicef and 3D Learning have partnered to bring about this event, which is open to kids ages 5-18.  Practice is open now on the website and classrooms, homeschoolers or individual students are invited to register.  Are you ready to participate?

Canton Township will be holding a job fair on Saturday, February 27th, from 10:00AM to 1:00PM for seasonal part-time positions. A listing of available positions and application can be found on the township website.

CultureGrams is a database which would be of interest to a wide range of patrons-from a high school student who has to do a country report to the family going on a vacation to a remote island off the coast of Africa. Culturegrams helps take each culture and country on its own terms and appreciate it for the gifts it brings to the world table.

Noboby Owens, or Bod, is a 'normal' boy fated to be raised in a graveyard by ghosts and a guardian who is neither dead nor alive. Magical, terrifying, and filled with gripping adventures, The Graveyard Book is another supernatural masterpiece by Neil Gaiman and was justly awarded the 2009 Newbery Medal. Coraline, another creepy  Gaiman concoction, was made into a 3D step-motion animated film and is now showing at theaters. Check it out!

Sister Wife by Shelley Hrdlitschka is an unbiased look at a different culture. Celeste grew up in Unity, a polygamist compound with few modern conveniences. She is soon to be married, shortly after her 15th birthday, to a much older man chosen by the prophet. However, Celeste is questioning her faith and is not sold on the idea of marriage. Learn about the decades in a fun way by using our database Pop Culture Universe. Each decade, from the 1920s to the 2000s, is populated with facts about the arts, culture, fasion, movies, food and drink, literature, music, politics, TV and radio of the time period. A must-stop for any school "decades research" assignment! An excellent source for a glimpse of Americana!

You don't have to be an etymologist to enjoy thinking about the roots of language.  In Alphabet Juice, Roy Blount Jr. has a lot of fun looking at the relationships between word structure, meaning and phonetics.  On a more serious note, the arguments he discusses can be traced back to Plato's Cratylus in Plato Unmasked by Keith Quincy.

The 1st of this 2-disc video set about Spanish Architect, Antonio Gaudi, (1852-1926), is accompanied by music and is almost entirely without narration.  The viewer experiences Gaudi's unique forms unencumbered by analytic information, so their beauty, fluidity and integration with nature are abstracted from their utility. The 2nd disc provides biographical information about Gaudi’s life and work.

I just read “The Totally Interactive Keyboard Bible” by Steve Lodder. This is an incredible resource for any piano or keyboard player. This set is appropriate for all levels of players. It starts right at the beginning with how to read music and progress from there well into advanced intermediate material.

It covers many styles with exercises and example.
