Boy did I have a great morning! I got to help out at the Halloween Fun program. Not only that, I was the Grand Marshall for the Trick or Treat parade portion of the program! What fun! I saw some old friends and made some new ones. I really really loved all the kids in their cool and cute costumes! You should really should have seen all the fun we had. But guess what? You still can! Just check out the Canton Public Library's Flickr account! 'Cause let's face it, no one can resist seeing pictures of cute kids in costumes. Which reminds me, are you coming to the library on Halloween? I wanna see your costumes! So make sure the library's on your stop this Halloween — early because we close at six. You might just see some unusual library staff that day--and Friday too!!

Shiver by Maggie Stievfater has all the elements I loved about Twilight. This fast paced story is complete with supernatural romance, action, adventure, and teenage anxiety. This will be one of those books all your friends will be talking about, so get your hands on a copy now.

Out of boredom I picked up I Am the Cheese, by Robert Cormier, again, and, man, I have to say it's just as good as I remember it. A slightly disturbed kid starts on a perplexing bicycle trip across country all the while flashing back to strange question and answer sessions with a mysterious doctor. There's lots of emotional depth as well as some nice twists in this little story. There is a good reason Robert Cormier is considered by many to be a master of his craft.

When the United States entered World War II, American men went into the military and American women filled their places in the offices and factories. "We can do it" was the slogan and Rosie the Riveter was the symbol of these working women. The American Rosie the Riveter Association has gathered together the stories of the "Rosies" and, thanks to a donation by a Rosie, the Canton Library has the set of these books.

From October 26-30, you are invited to participate in a unique, virtual dialogue on "Stealing Buddha's Dinner" with individuals from other Michigan communities, high schools, colleges, and others. Questions emanating from Bich's tour visit Oct 13-17, as well as from her memoir, will be posed to stimulate dialogue on immigration stories, cultural understanding, and contemporary history.

Discussion will occur on the Great Michigan Read Facebook Discussion Board, beginning October 26. We look forward to the conversation and your participation!

Bouchercon 2010 will be held in San Francisco this year, October 14 - 17.  Bouchercon is the World Mystery Convention. Every year readers, writers, publishers, editors, agents, booksellers and other lovers of crime fiction gather for a long weekend of both education and entertainment. Panel discussions, author signings, awards, and more are available throughout this four day conference. This year's Guests of Honor are Lee Childs, Denise Mina, Laurie R. I don't know if you've heard, but Robert Kirkman's survival horror comic book series The Walking Dead is soon going to be a TV series on AMC! Really. I'm not joking. I decided to pick this up recently, and man is it entertaining. I recommend checking it out before the series airs. I'm hooked enough that I'm now digging into book two. Kirkman basically explores what might happen if a zombie movie kept the camera rolling. After the initial survival frenzy, what would it be like trying to live your life in a Zombie apocalypse? What would that do to people? It makes for interesting reading, let me say. Can't wait to finish book two and get into book three...

According to the plot of a new film being released on November 13, the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012. Supposedly based on the fact that the Mayan calendar "runs out" after that date, there has been a slew of books, articles and websites devoted to this phenomenon - as well as the aforementioned film 2012. So what's it really all about?

Looking for primary documents? The World Digital Library can help. It contains manuscripts, maps, letters, rare books, recordings, film, photographs and architectural drawings from around the world and in different languages. You can browse their online collection by region, time period, topic, the type of institution that houses the item (like the Library of Congress or the Bibliotheca Alexandrina), or by the type of item. For example, here is a map of British Antarctic expeditions from 1907 to 1909 made by the famous explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton!

The Alex Awards are given every year to the top ten books written for adults that have special appeal to teens. The 2009 Alex Awards include some incredible titles including Over And Under by Todd Tucker. If the teen room just doesn't have what you need, check out the current and past Alex Award lists for a recommendation.

The Michigan Humanities Council announced the details for Bich Minh Nguyen, author of Stealing Buddha's Dinner, to tour Michigan as part of the Council's 2009-2010 Great Michigan Read. The Council will bring Nguyen to five Michigan cities - Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Midland, Lansing, and Plymouth - from October 13-17, 2009. The public is invited to each event, but seating is limited. All events are free except where noted. A book signing will be provided at each location. Those interested are encouraged to contact each of the sites for more information.

One name I didn't see on the wiki was Neal Shusterman, author of some dark and creepy books including: Everlost and Downsiders. And if you've already read everything and want the newest we've got, get on the hold list for Megan Crewe's Give up the ghost. I've heard some good things about it.

Hey Kids!
I just wanted to make you all aware of some very important holidays this week. Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14th is National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work day. It's kinda like take your Children to Work Day, except for bears. Make sure your parents know! Probably the best way to make sure they celebrate it would be to sneak your teddy bear into their work bag before they leave. Then make sure you ask what your teddy did at work when they get home.
