Murder Will Out: The Godfather of Goth

John Cusack will portray Edgar Allan Poe, the "godfather of goth" in the upcoming movie The raven. Author Edgar Allan Poe forms a reluctant partnership with a police detective to catch a murderer who kills his victims by following elements of Poe's stories. Alice Eve plays Poe's love interest, Alice, and Luke Evans plays the police detective. The film is directed by James McTeigue. The raven is due in the theaters in March 2012.

The devil in the white city: book jacketThe Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson.  Architect Daniel Hudson Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he and others transformed swampy Jackson Park into the White City for the World's Columbian Exposition 1893 in Chicago, while Henry H. Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths.

Copies of The Devil in the White City will be distributed on September 28 at the book discussion. Beginning September 29, ask for a copy of The Devil in the White City at the Adult Reference Desk.

Canton Seniors Book Discussion group will meet on Wednesday, September 28 from 2:00-3:00 PM in Canton Public Library's Group Study Room A. This month's reading selection is:

Water for Elephants: a novel by Sara Gruen — Surprising, poignant, and funny, Water for Elephants is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down; with characters so engaging, they continue to live long after the last page has been turned; with a world built of wonder, a world so real, one starts to breathe its air.

Copies of Water for Elephants will be available to pick up beginning Wednesday, August 24. Ask a librarian at the Adult Reference Desk for the book and a copy of this year's reading selections. The schedule is posted on Canton Public Library's Book Clubs page.

Murder Will Out: Prequel to "Inspector Morse"

PBS' Masterpiece Mystery has announced a prequel to the Inspector Morse series will be aired in 2012. Shaun Evans will star as Morse. The working title is "Endeavor". If you haven't watched this wonderful series nor read the Inspector Morse books by Colin Dexter, do so! Last Bus to Woodstock published in 1975 introduces Morse.

National S'mores Day

Today is National S'Mores Day! Did you know S'mores were invented by the Girl Scouts of America? When marshmallows became popular early in the 20th Century, enterprising Girl Scouts created an easy to assemble (marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers) dessert to enjoy over the campfire.

James Sallis' 2005 neo-noir novel, Drive is coming to a theater near you this September. A stunt driver for movies, Driver finds more excitement as a wheelman during robberies, but when a heist goes sour, a contract is put on his head, and Driver's survival skills go into high gear.
