Parents

Do you speak or want to learn a non-English language?

Do you speak a language other than English? Are you studying a language in school? Do you want to learn another language for your own enrichment? If you answered YES to any of those questions, you need to check out the children's international language collection.

Last year we added non-English juvenile feature films and learning DVDs and all languages available in the Muzzy language learning series, and this year we've eliminated the old book/cassette language kits and have updated with book/CD kits.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hi Kids!  Thorndyke here!  Did you know that today—March 19th –is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day?   And since all the kids who come to the Canton Public Library are absolutely incredible, it’s a very important day to celebrate.   My favorite way?  With a song!  Maybe "Skinnamarink" by Sharon, Lois, and Bram. Another great way is with ice cream!  May I suggest the flavor Bear Claw?  It’s my favorite!   Have a great week, kids!

Now for Kids: Inspiring Books from "Three Cups of Tea"

Three Cups of Tea has been on the New York Times paperback nonfiction bestseller list for 108 weeks running (currently in the #1 slot) for good reason: Greg Mortenson, who is carrying out his mission to build schools — and peace — in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, is living proof of how one person can truly make a difference in the world. Now, Mortenson’s story is accessible to young children through the newly published picture book Listen to the Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea. A Young Readers’ version of Three Cups of Tea has also just been published. My 8-yr-old son and I saw Mortenson in late January when he spoke to a packed auditorium (800+ people) at Ann Arbor’s Huron High School.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey kids! Guess What? Today it is only 100 days until Summer Reading! Aren’t you excited? This year the theme is Get Creative @ Your Library—but I can’t tell you any more because that would spoil all the surprises we have planned! All I can tell you is that it will be FUN! And guess what? Today also means it’s only 100 days until summer vacation. Good times. So if it gets cold later next week, just repeat this to yourself “Summer Reading’s Coming! Summer Reading’s Coming!” and the day will be a whole lot sunnier.
