Presents the life of the artist, who was inspired as a child by a book of anatomy given to him by his mother after being injured in a car crash and who went on to become a celebrity in the art world before his early death at twenty-eight.

Preschool Storytime

Preschool storytimes feature longer books, flannel board and rhymes designed for children ages 3 1/2 - 5.These activities help develop pre-reading skills.  Children must be able to sit independently and be attentive for 30 minutes. Parents may attend and participate, or must remain in the children's department. Storytimes will be held in the Friends' Activity Room starting Monday, January 9 through Friday, February 17. Please pick a Monday or a Friday session.

Leonard Cohen, one of the most admired performers of the last half century, has had a stranger-than-fiction, roller-coaster ride of a life. Now, for the first time, he tells his story in his own words, via more than 50 interviews conducted worldwide between 1966 and 2012. In Leonard Cohen on Leonard Cohen, which includes a foreword by singer Suzanne Vega and eight pages of rarely, seen photos the artist talks about Bird on the Wire, Hallelujah, and his other classic songs. He candidly discusses his famous romances, his years in a Zen monastery, and his ill-fated collaboration with producer Phil Spector, his long battle with depression, and much more. You will find interviews that first appeared in the New York Times and Rolling Stone, but also conversations that have not previously been printed in English. Winter Snow Spree

Celebrate family, snow and all things winter at our Snow Spree on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 from 7:00-8:30PM. Carousel Acres will be flying over a live reindeer who will be visiting with us outside and the fine folks from Dan Dan the Choo Choo Man will be giving train rides in our front loop, so please dress for the weather! Then, come inside and warm up with some hot chocolate, video stories, crafts and more. Enjoy while supplies last. No registration required.

K Club

Children ages 4-6 can join our K Club program which encourages literacy and creative skills for children in the pre-k to kindergarten age range. We will listen and participate in stories, crafts and activities that center around a Christmas theme. Kids will also create a reindeer snack and have one of their own. Registration required.

The United Nations is celebrating 2016's World Space Week from Oct. 4-10th. Check out some of these picture books dealing with the moon, the stars, aliens, and astronauts.

A young child thinks about what it would be like to be an astronaut and go out on a mission into space. The book uses actual terminology, such as gravity, orbit, and satellite, in easy to read, simple sentences paired with colorful drawings.

Goodnight moon by Margaret Wise Brown

A little bunny bids goodnight to all the objects in his room before falling asleep.

Written by an astronaut, a small but plucky mouse named Mike is sure that he can help the Space Shuttle astronauts, and ends up saving the whole mission. Includes facts about NASA and space travel. His adventures continue in the sequel Mousetronaut Goes to Mars.

2016 Family Music Fest!

Music creates a soundtrack for our lives. It can enliven and enrich the lives of kids and the people who care for them from infancy and beyond. On Saturday, October 15 from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM we will host a day's worth of fantastic, energetic, diverse musical acts. Come and celebrate the beat within all of us. This program is designed for families and patrons of all ages. The schedule is as follows...

10:00AM - Music with Ms Carissa - Ms Carissa unleashes her tot rock for all to hear. She will be playing both her originals as well as some tried and true classics. Come and join her already huge local following. Recommended for families with kids birth thru 8 yrs old.

11:30AM - Detroit Pleasure Society - Traditional Jazz has never sounded so fresh and new. Check out Detroit Pleasure Society's bombastic and swingin' good tunes. Recommended for patrons young, old and everyone in between.

2:00PM - Drummunity - Lori Fithian lives to the beat of her own drum and challenges you to do the same. Experience the creation of and contribute to a real life, huge drum circle made up of all who wish to join the beat. All ages welcome. No previous experience required.  

4:00PM - Istvan & his Imaginary Band - Istvan used to play in rock bands. Then, inspired by the birth of his own daughter, he decided to start to write his own rock songs and share them with elementary school aged kids and their families all around Chicago. Now he's branching out even further to rock the socks off of families all over the place and he's even won a Parent's Choice "Fun Stuff" Award for his most recent album, Playtime. The music he creates is super fun and highly interactive. Don't miss it!
