Hummingbird Celebrates "Sing with your Child" Month

On Wednesday, March 19, from 10:00-10:45 AM, parents, caregivers and children 0-5 are invited to join Hummingbirds Music Together as part of "Sing with Your Child" month. Children will enjoy a morning full of singing and movement. We will play follow the leader during "Follow me Down to Carlow," count stars while rocking to "Great Big Stars," and think up favorite treats to eat on a “Trot to Grandma’s House." Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. This program will be presented by staff from the Grosse Pointe Music Academy of Canton.

Cultural Expo Open House

The Cultural Expo open house will be presenting information from cultures all over the world, some well known and some not. Every country will have an activity, from coloring pages to puppets. Other countries will have traditional food with the recipes available if you love the food and want to make some at home. Countries represented will be Korea, Germany, India, Honduras, Poland and others!!
Join us on Saturday, March 22 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM as a team of National Honor Society students teach about and celebrate cultures from around the world.

Type 2 Diabetes Prevention for Kids

On Saturday, March 8 from 2:00-2:45 PM, join local Pilates and Weight Loss Coach Judy Farmer, as she discusses the ins and outs of child diabetes and how to prevent it. As a mother of seven kids, Farmer knows how to get kids motivated! Get ready for fun as your kids jump to super dubstep music and learn easy ways to have energy and feel good all day. Bring a friend! Best for ages 6-10 year old.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Winners and Honor Books

Today the American Library Association announces its Youth Book & Media Awards, including the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. Many of us know and love Dr. Seuss, an author who created engaging stories for beginning readers, and this award celebrates books that continue that tradition today. If you need a fun suggestion for a beginning reader, this list has some great ideas. For more information about this award and its recipients, check the ALA website.

K Club

Children ages 4-6 who are pre-k or in kindergarten are invited to this program created just for them. We will share some silly stories together, and enjoy a snack and a craft around this fun theme. Come join our giggles at the library on February 22, 11:00-11:45 PM.

Superfun Unicorn Party!

unicorn greatUnicorns are so awesome! Come and celebrate their coolness at our Superfun Unicorn Party on Thursday, February 20, 2014 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. We will read a magical Unicorn story, make some fun crafts, and have an awesome snack. This program is open to kids ages 4 years to 8 years old and their caregiver. Registration will begin Monday, January 20, 2014. See you there! Horn wearing optional!

Dance Your Fanny Off

Families with young children can join us for a freestyle dance party for our littlest patrons. Everyone gets movin' and groovin' to some great dance tunes.

This program is for new walkers up to 5 years old with their caregivers.

Detroit Association of Black Storytellers Present: Vickie Slaughter

Join us on February 27 from 7:00-8:00 PM as we celebrate Black History Month and welcome storyteller Vickie Slaughter from the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers.  Ms Slaughter will be weaving tales of African lands, trickster animals and African American heroes.  Listen and enjoy!

ABC Activity Time

ABC Activity Time will begin Monday, January 6. This is an informal session where parents, caregivers, children and babies meet together in a relaxed environment. This drop-in playtime includes sensory activities, puzzles, and matching games for children ages birth to 5, with caregiver. No registration required. Program takes place in the Community Room, unless otherwise noted.

ABC Activity Times, January 6-February 15:

Due to library renovations we will be closed on February 3 and 4. Therefore there will be no ABC Activity Time on these days. ABC Activity Time will resume on February 5.
The Children's Library and Purple Room will be closed from February 3 through February 15. All ABC Activity Times will be held in the Community Room during this time.

Family Storytime

Family Storytimes begin the week of January 6. These storytimes are designed for children ages 5 and under with a caregiver, and do not require registration. Weekday sessions are held in the Community Room. Saturday sessions are in the Purple Room.

On Wednesday December 18 from 10:00-10:45 AM, you and your child, babies-5 years old, will help bring the holidays to life with music and dance as we ring in the season with music from The Nutcracker, as well as other musical classics that are part of winter holiday celebrations across the world. Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. This program will be presented by staff from the Grosse Pointe Music Academy of Canton.

The K Club

Children ages 4-6 who are pre-K or in kindergarten are invited to this program designed especially for them. We will have great stories, a snack and a craft centered around a Christmas theme. Come join us for this fun time at the library on Monday, December 23, 11:00-11:45 AM.

December Creatapillars!

caterpillarAre you a creative kid? This crafty program is tailored to kids who are 5 to 9 years old. Let your creative side flow in our program, Creatapillars. Our next program will meet on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. Registration begins Monday, November 25, 2013.

Target Family Reading Night: Frosty's Birthday

On December 19 from 7:00-8:00 PM, Target presents a wonderful, winter reading celebration! Find out about the frolicking of "Snowmen at Night", sample a tasty, snowy treat and most importantly celebrate the birthday of one of the most famous of snow friends... Frosty! It's Frosty's birthday party, you see--but where is he? Rick Morse Puppets will share a fast-paced romp with audience participation, side-splitting comedy magic, and an appearance by the guest of honor himself, Frosty the Snowman, live and in person! This program is open to kids ages 4 to 8 years old with their grown-ups. Registration begins November 25.

A Holiday in the Islands Concert

Looking forward to the holidays, but already weary of the cold? We have the solution and something for everyone. Enjoy the amazing Gratitude Steel Band as they present "A Holiday in the Islands Concert" on Sunday, December 15 at 2 PM. Chaz and his band, a product of Trinidad and Tobago, will perform fun music celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza. You won't be able to sit still through this upbeat performance.

Target Family Fun Harvest Party!

Fall is in the air! Join us for our November Target Family Fun Night! We'll have a wonderful time celebrating the season at our Harvest Party. Games, crafts, snack and a special Thanksgiving surprise. We look forward to seeing you on Monday, November 18 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Open to kids ages 4 to 8 years old with their Grown-ups. Registration begins October 25, 2013.

Read with a Dog!

Kids and Tweens in grades K-6, improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a Canine Good Citizen. Sign up begins at 6:25 PM at the Children's Desk and is on a first come, first served basis. Sessions start at 10 minutes per sitting.

Monster Mash Masquerade

Families with young children can get dressed in their most comfortable costumes and get your dance on! This program is an open dance party for our littlest patrons to get movin' and groovin' with their grownups to some great spooky tunes. After we've danced the monsters away, be ready for a Halloweeny trick-or-treat through the library!

Designed for new walkers up to 5 years old, dancing is a great way to have some fun!
